Rhode Island FC has reinforced the strikeforce after announcing the loan of 23-year-old forward Logan Dorsey from Minnesota United 2 for the 2026 campaign.
Dorsey, selected 55th overall in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, had a breakout rookie year for the Loons’ MLS NEXT Pro side, becoming the club’s season-leading scorer with 12 goals and four assists across 19 matches, averaging a goal every 112 minutes and placing him in the 96th percentile of MLSNP attackers.
“Logan is a proven goalscorer at both the collegiate and professional levels," said Rhode Island FC Head Coach and General Manager Khano Smith. “His relentless work rate and keen eye for goal will help add an extra dimension to our attack.”
Starting the season strong with three goals in his first three games, Dorsey truly captured lightning in a bottle towards the end of the 2025 season, earning an assist or goal in the final nine matches of the regular season before going on to score in two of their three playoff matches.
Prior to joining Minnesota United, the right-footed forward experienced a standout senior season with the University of Kentucky, scoring 14 goals and earning three assists, including becoming the first player in program history with two hat-tricks in a single season.
For Dorsey, this isn’t the first time playing in the USL Championship. A native of Evergreen, Colorado, Dorsey came up in the Colorado Rapids academy program experiencing several loan stints with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. In 2019, Dorsey, the then 16-year-old scored his first professional goal with the Switchbacks against Tacoma Defiance.
In regard to Rhode Island, the arrival of center forward reinforcements answers frontline concerns as both a depth piece for JJ Williams, who has not yet been able to play over 2,000 minutes a season due to injuries, and a replacement for the departed Albert “Chico” Dikwa who was transferred back to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the beginning of the preseason. The move will also give the team tactical flexibility up front, allowing the deployment of Noah Fuson and Leo Afonso to play wide or centrally as needed.
While having the height to compete aerially at 6’1, it’s the ground game where Dorsey saw a majority of professional success, bringing a physical strength and presence that allows him to dominate the ball in hold-up play and be a lethal finisher in the box. His most dangerous attributes come from his off-the-ball movement, getting behind lines and finding opportunity from service generated wide, a key attacking threat that was missing from Rhode Island’s attack in 2025.
The younger brother of Orlando City winger, Griffin Dorsey, the loanee becomes the third transaction between MNUFC and RIFC following the successful loan of Morris Duggan and purchase of Hugo Bacharach. If those previous transactions are any hint to the quality of talent coming from Minnesota, the 2026 USL Championship season promises to be a critical moment for Dorsey as he integrates with the Amber and Blue and adapts to second division play.
