Coming off a 3-1 victory over New York Cosmos, Portland Hearts of Pine were unable to carry that momentum, falling 3-0 on the road to expansion side Fort Wayne FC in a match that stayed within reach until the second half broke open.
Portland was able to create scoring opportunities early in the match. Ollie Wright found Josh Drack on a nifty feed, breaking into space just outside the penalty area, but Fort Wayne keeper Bernd Schipmann was able to get down and smother the attempt before it could become dangerous. Fort Wayne answered right back when Ian Abbey received a pass on the rush and fired from inside the area, only for Portland defender Mo Mohamed to slide across and deflect the effort over the crossbar. Wright later delivered Portland’s second promising look of the half after Mikey Lopez found him battling through traffic in the box, but the Hearts attacker was marked by defenders and only managed a soft shot on frame.
The Hearts worked the ball into the middle third during the opening 45 minutes but struggled to connect on the final attacking pass. Abbey remained at the center of Fort Wayne’s attack throughout the half, creating chances and keeping pressure on Portland’s back line.
Fort Wayne wasted little time turning opportunities into successes following the restart. Kash Oladapo was called into action early with a save on Abbey before Fort Wayne finally broke through in the 54th minute. Forward Lilian Ricol started the sequence by pushing the ball up the far sideline to Jayden Smith, who quickly returned it into space behind the Portland defense. Ricol ran onto the pass and blasted a shot past Oladapo at the near post to give Fort Wayne the lead.
Ricol secured a brace ten minutes later with one of the cleaner finishes of the night. Following a restart, Schipmann launched a long ball ahead that found Ricol in stride. The Fort Wayne attacker calmly guided the ball off his left foot toward the far angle, banking it off the post and across the goal line for a 2-0 lead. Portland attempted to answer with a wave of substitutions, bringing on Titus Washington, Diogo Barbosa, and Jaden Jones-Riley in search of a spark, while JayTee Kamara nearly pulled one back in the 72nd minute with a left-footed effort that drifted just over the crossbar.
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared moments later when Taig Healy capitalized on a misplayed ball from Barbos near the edge of the penalty area. Healy cut inside to create separation before ripping a shot into the upper right corner beyond a diving Oladapo to stretch the lead to 3-0. Fort Wayne continued to threaten over the closing stages with Healy, Clarence Awoudor, and Kabiru Gafar all testing Portland from distance, while Portland struggled to generate clean opportunities in the attacking third. Portland did not register another shot on frame until the 95th minute, when Titus Washington found Aboubacar Camara inside the box who was able to get a shot away, but it was struck directly at Schipmann, allowing the Fort Wayne keeper to preserve the clean sheet.
The shutout marked Portland’s fourth scoreless performance through seven league matches this season as they fall to 2-2-3. Hearts of Pine now continue their road swing with a trip to face Union Omaha.
