According to sources within the club, Michele Roux, Chief Operating Officer of Hartford Athletic, has left the organization. As of time of publication, Hartford had yet to formally release the news, but a statement provided in response to an inquiry from The Blazing Musket read: “Michele has stepped down as COO of Hartford Athletic. We wish her the best and are grateful for the contributions she has made over the years.”
The Blazing Musket understands that the news was relayed to Hartford Athletic employees during a staff meeting on Monday; at that meeting, staff were told that Roux had resigned. Roux also appears to have deleted her profile on professional networking site LinkedIn, which had previously characterized her as an “analytical, articulate and results-driven professional excelling in a challenging, fast- paced industry.”
Roux had been notably absent from Saturday’s kit reveal for Hartford’s W League event. She had previously been front and center for Hartford’s W League events, including the introduction of head coach Danny Barrera last October. On Saturday, a club spokesperson had declined to comment on Roux’s absence, but during the event, chairman Bruce Mandell indicated that the club’s W League efforts would be headed up by Rashad Hyacenth, EVP of Business Development.
The reasons for that absence became clearer on Monday, as Roux's departure from the organization was confirmed, after over seven years with the organization. She was promoted to COO in October of 2024, following the departure of Nick Sackiewicz in August of that year. Previously Roux had served as EVP of Business Operations beginning in 2022, and prior to that as Director of Soccer Operations from January 2019 to March 2020, and VP of Business Operations from March 2020 until her promotion to EVP.
At the time of her promotion to COO, chairman Bruce Mandell was full of praise for Roux.
“Michele has been a driving force behind Hartford Athletic’s operational excellence since our inaugural season in 2019, and her commitment to our mission, her deep-rooted connection to our community, and her ability to inspire and empower those around her have been instrumental to our growth. I look forward to continuing to partner with Michele, and I am confident that her leadership will propel Hartford Athletic to new heights.”
On the field, the club has undoubtedly reached new heights, lifting the first trophy in club history after winning the USL Cup in 2025, and reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Off the field, things have been less successful, with the 2026 season seeing a series of operational issues that left many longtime fans feeling less than connected to the club.
It’s unclear at this time if those operational issues had anything at all to do with Roux’s departure, but in the aftermath of the news becoming public, several former club employees reached out to The Blazing Musket to offer their perspective. One former club employee, who requested anonymity, was straightforward in their assessment.
“As someone who has experienced many different leadership styles and methods through my career, I can say Michele Roux has been the worst leader I worked under. The lack of c-suite experience, inability to lead any prior companies and losing over 25 employees in a year, this should come as no surprise. How she came into the position as COO made no sense to me.”
Another former employee – who also requested anonymity – was more succinct. On hearing the news, they simply said, “Greatest thing to happen to Hartford Athletic since inception.”
Commentary of this nature had previously circulated online, particularly on social media site Reddit, but this is the first time that any employee, past or present, has been willing to place any comments on the record.
As for what this means for Hartford Athletic going forward, in the short term, Mandell will step into a more active role overseeing operations. According to a statement provided by the club:
“Bruce Mandell will oversee day-to-day operations during this transition, ensuring continuity and stability for the organization. In the meantime, we are committed to conducting a thorough search to identify the right leader to build on what we've established and continue to elevate Hartford Athletic."
This is a developing story.
