Boston Legacy FC is making a much-needed addition to its backline with the signing of defender Sam Angel, the team announced Monday.
Angel is on loan from the Chicago Stars and will be with Boston until July 30, 2026. There will be a mutual option for both teams to extend her contract until the end of the season.
Her experience playing leftback and left centerback will surely be put to use considering the Legacy currently have Kaká, Nicki Hernandez, and Laís Araújo out to injury.
“Sam is a player who brings valuable versatility and depth across key areas of the pitch,” said Legacy general manager Domè Guasch. “This move aligns well for both her and the club at this point in the season, and it will be good to have her with the group through to the summer. She’s gained strong experience in Europe and has been working hard in training with Chicago this year, so we’re looking forward to seeing her integrate quickly.”
The 25-year-old previously signed a two-year contract with Chicago Stars FC last summer and had three starts in four total games. The defender was listed on the 2026 roster, but had not made any appearances this season.
Angel was originally the 48th pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft, chosen in the fourth round by Racing Louisville FC. She made one preseason appearance in the club’s invitational tournament before going international.
The St. Charles, Missouri native signed her first professional contract with IFK Norrköping, a team in Norway’s top flight, soon after. She had an Ironwoman 2024 season, playing all 26 games and scoring two goals, which helped her team finish fifth in the league. She started 12 games and scored one goal in the 2025 season before transferring to the Stars.
Angel played five years at the University of Iowa and was captain her last two seasons. The Hawkeye set the program record for most minutes (8,322), starts (96), and matches played (97). She also helped her team win the 2023 Big Ten championship in her final year and was the first Hawkeye to be drafted into the NWSL.
The new addition attended Friday’s game against the San Diego Wave and was seen watching warmups with Nicki Hernandez and Ella Stevens.
