Two of the games historical best up against two upstarts, feels just like old times.

A throwback group led by Spain and Uruguay up against known regional players Saudi Arabia and debutants Cape Verde should make for some interesting matchups. Spain clearly the powerhouse but I think they'll be tested by this diverse group of teams.

Can Uruguay prove they're capable of competing with Spain or will they be another feather in the cap of known group stage upset masters Saudi Arabia? Can the first timers from Cape Verde make the knockout rounds on their first attempt? There's a lot to answer and look forward to out of this group.

Why a primer and not a preview? Because this is more of a handy reference guide than it is expert analysis. I did not watch or scout 32 international teams to prepare for the World Cup let alone 48 of them because I enjoy sleep and I am not apologizing.

GROUP H TEAM PRIMERS

Author's Notes: FIFA Rankings are from the November 2025 listing at the time of the tournament draw. Players international caps/goals are relatively accurate but may not include the recent warm-up friendlies as research for these articles started weeks ago. Abbreviations next to the country names should be their official Olympic code on the score bug and the Letter/Number is their draw position for the group schedule not their pot from the initial tournament draw. Warm up friendlies in the USA are noted otherwise vs/at indicates true home/away matches.

2026 FIFA World Cup Group F Recaps: Sweden Rampant Over Tunisia, Japan Late Equalizer Earns Draw with Netherlands
Group F concluded Sunday’s action with a goalfest but it was the opening match of the group that produce all the drama.

CAPE VERDE (Cabo Verde) [CPV/H2]

Head Coach: Pedro Leitao Brito aka “Bubista”

FIFA Ranking: 68

Nickname: Blue Sharks

Qualification: CAF (Africa) Group D Winners

Appearance: Debut

Best Finish: N/A

Roster Breakdown: 6 Domestic (Portugal), 4 Turkey, 2 Bulgaria, 2 Cyprus, 2 Russia, 2 USA/MLS, 1 Finland, 1 Ireland, 1 Hungary, 1 Israel, 1 Romania, 1 Netherlands, 1 Spain, 1 UAE

Recent Matches: Friendly (Lisbon, Portugal W vs Serbia 3-0, Friendly (East Hartford, CT) W vs Bermuda 3-0

Player To Know: DF Steven Moreira, Columbus Crew (USA/MLS), 20 Int’l Caps/0 Int’l Goals – The longtime Crew defender was a big part of their stellar run in 2023/24 and earned Defender of the Year honors in 2024.

Player To Watch: FW Ryan Mendes, Igdir (TUR), 98 Int’l Caps/22 Int’l Goals  Already his country's leader in appearances and goals, he will likely earn international centurion status at this World Cup. Spent time early in his career in France with Le Havre and Lille and a loan spell with Nottingham Forest before becoming a regular contributor in the Turkish and UAE leagues.

Tournament Outlook

Cape Verde has only been independent since 1975, so most of the island’s soccer history is fairly recent, but they are improving rapidly. Two AFCON quarterfinals in four appearances since 2013, despite missing out on the most recent tournament is still a solid resume for the emerging Sharks. Topped Cameroon in African qualifying, played Iran and Egypt to draws last November, and how could you not love a team that wins games at Rentschler Field in East Hartford? Third place would be a fantastic finish for them here and is not unrealistic.

2026 FIFA World Cup Group E Recaps: Ivory Coast at the Death Over Ecuador While Germany Routs Curacao
It was a familiar scoreline for Germany but a late Ivory Coast winner could be the most important goal of the tournament so far.

SAUDI ARABIA [KSA/H3]

Head Coach: Giorgos Donis (GER)

FIFA Ranking: 60

Nickname: Green Falcons

Qualification: AFC (Asia) Fourth Round Group B Winner

Appearance: 7th

Best Finish: Round of 16 (1994)

Roster Breakdown: 25 Domestic, 1 France

Recent Matches: Friendly (Harrison, NJ) L vs Ecuador 2-1, Friendly (Austin, TX) W vs Puerto Rico 3-0, Friendly (San Antonio, TX) D vs Senegal 0-0

Player To Know: MF Salem Al-Dawsari, Al-Hilal (KSA), 110 Int’l Caps/27 Int’l Goals

Player To Watch: DF Saud Abdulhamid, Lens (FRA), 55 Int’l Caps/1 Int’l Goal – Spent last season on loan at Lens and made 30 appearances in league and cup action. Played in all three games in the last World Cup for the Green Falcons and I’m very interested to see how the only non-domestic league player can do this time around.

Tournament Outlook

Provided the absolute shock of the tournament by upsetting Argentina in their first group match before dropping the next two against Poland and Mexico. Their recent form is not spectacular and their qualifying run was fairly tepid scoring just 7 goals in 6 games in the main group phase, but hopefully they can carry some momentum from that shutout against Senegal. They get Uruguay first and then Spain and it’s going to be very unlikely for them to have a point going into their final group game but they had a stunner last year so we can’t say it’s not possible.

2026 FIFA World Cup Group F TV Schedule and Primer: Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, Tunisia
Another fantastic group draw featuring highly technical sides and varying styles, but is everyone chasing the Oranje?

SPAIN [ESP/H1]

Head Coach: Luis de la Fuente

FIFA Ranking: 1

Nickname: La Roja

Qualification: UEFA (Europe) Group E Winners

Appearance: 17th

anBest Finish: Champions (2010)

Roster Breakdown: 17 Domestic, 7 England, 1 Germany, 1 France

Recent Matches: Friendly D vs Iraq 1-1, Friendly (Puebla, Mexico) W vs Peru 3-1

Player To Know: FW Lamine Yamal, Barcelona (ESP), 25 Int’l Caps/6 Int’l Goals – Yeah, this kid is the next global superstar with three La Liga titles, a Ballon D’Or runner up, and Euro title all as a teenager. He's carrying an injury into the tournament but should be available off the bench in the opener.

Player To Watch: MF Rodri, Manchester City (ENG), 62 Int’l Caps/4 Int’l Goals – The Spanish captain is the cog that makes the engine go; one of the reasons their attack is so hard to deal with is because they have one of the best D-mids in the world helping set them up.

Tournament Outlook

Hey remember when that 2010 Spain team went Euro-World Cup-Euro...well guess who’s the defending European champions with a roster that barely has anyone on the wrong side of 30. Can they repeat what their previous great generation pulled off? I don’t know, but it is absolutely terrifying that they have a tremendous chance to do it.

2026 FIFA World Cup Group E TV Schedule and Primer: Curacao, Ecuador, Germany, Ivory Coast
Three defensive rocks look to avoid trouble against the Blue Wave of Curacao, can Ecuador or Ivory Coast upset Germany in this group?

URUGUAY [URU/H4]

Head Coach: Marcelo Bielsa (ARG)

FIFA Ranking: 16 Nickname: La Celeste

Qualification: CONEMBOL (S. America) Fourth Place

Appearance: 15th

Best Finish: Winners (1930, 1950)

Roster Breakdown: 7 Brazil, 4 Mexico, 4 Spain, 2 Argentina, 2 Portugal, 1 Greece, 1 Saudi Arabia, 1 USA/MLS

Recent Matches (in March 2026): Friendly D at England 1-1, Friendly (in Turin, Italy) D vs Algeria 0-0

Player To Know: MF Federico Valverde, Real Madrid (ESP), 73 Int’l Caps/9 Int’l Goals – A regular with Real Madrid making 30+ La Liga appearances in six of the last seven season and that doesn’t include the dozens of UCL matches. Scored a spot kick in stoppage time at Wembley in that 1-1 draw, which is the only goal Uruguay have scored this calendar year.

Player To Watch: FW Darwin Nunez, Al-Hilal (KSA), 38 Int’l Caps / 13 Int’l Goals – The former Benfica and Liverpool man now plies his trade in the Saudi league. A throwback true #9 striker, led Uruguay with five goals in qualifying and added two at Copa 2024 but has only featured five times over the last year and a half and hasn’t scored an international goal in two years. Uruguay’s going to need that to change if they want to avoid getting grouped on goals scored like they did four years ago.

Tournament Outlook

The two-time world champions' most important contribution to this cycle might have been their group stage win over the USMNT at Copa America 2024 that got Gregg Berhalter sacked. Otherwise, it’s been kind of mid for Uruguay as they bring a mostly veteran-laden roster to the World Cup.

Their 2011 Copa America win and 2010 World Cup semifinal run seem so long ago, and there’s just so few knockout wins in either competition since then. They should make the Round of 32, but they are their own worst enemy until proven otherwise and are just as capable of winning all three of these games as they are to dropping points in all three.

2026 FIFA World Cup Day 3 Recaps: Everything is Upside Down
Australia and Qatar have drastically changed their groups outlook with their results while Scotland leads Group C over Brazil and Morocco after one game.

GROUP OVERVIEW

Anything less than 9 points from Spain would be stunning because they're just on another level right now. Getting Uruguay last means they might not even have to enter their top gear in the first two games and already have a knockout spot if not the group all but clinched.

Uruguay is the key here, if they play to their abilities, they're the clear second-best team on paper. But they don't always do that at the World Cup of late and the Saudis we know are capable of getting wins in the group stage and I can not wait for the debut of the Blue Sharks.

Questions that should be answered today will be Cape Verde and if they're closer to say Haiti than they are to Curacao based on their game with Spain. Making a World Cup is great, your first game being against a Top 5 team in the world...not so much. Uruguay gets a win over the Saudis and I think they'll be set to battle Spain for the top spot, if not then where they finish is anyone's guess.

Third place has two things working against it here...stopping Spain from scoring a touchdown and Cape Verde and the Saudis not drawing each other. If the two lower-ranked sides split the points, and they meet on the final matchday, the only likely way through, is to already have a win over Uruguay, which, while possible, is still harder than it sounds. Best case is CPV/KSA get a win against the other and draw Uruguay to advance on four points in either second or third which is absolutely a legit scenario.

Leaning Cape Verde because they have a friendly win over Serbia (in Portugal, a virtual home game) in the same time frame the Saudis lost to them in a true road game despite the Saudis' penchant to get a win somewhere in the group stage. This might be a two-and-out group but would love for the Sharks and/or Falcons to be a potential Round of 32 upset team if one or both advance.

Third Place Advancement: Low (Cape Verde)

GROUP PREDICTIONS

  1. Spain 2. Uruguay 3. Cape Verde 4. Saudi Arabia
