Rhode Island FC bolstered its defense on Tuesday as the club announced the signing of defender CJ Williams for the 2026 season.

The 22-year-old arrives in the Ocean State after spending four seasons at the collegiate level with Boston College. Williams’ time with BC saw him tally two goals and an assist in 55 appearances.

Williams’ efforts with BC led to the New England Revolution selecting him with the 65th overall pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. Williams returned for his senior season at BC and spent some time with Revolution II this preseason before signing with Rhode Island.

Williams reunites with former Boston College teammate and RIFC midfielder Amos Shapiro-Thompson. The two were teammates during Amos’ senior and CJ’s freshman season in 2022.

Head coach Khano Smith called Williams a “well-rounded defender” and added that he brings “valuable experience at a young age."

With their March 7 home opener postponed, Williams and RIFC kick off the 2026 USL Championship season on March 14 when Rhode Island hosts USL Championship newcomers Sporting Jacksonville at 4 PM ET.
