Sunday saw the Pablo Moreira era kick off as New England Revolution II took the field at Bryant University’s Beirne Stadium as the club hosted former forward Liam Butts and Atlanta United 2. The Revs' second team secured a victory in a penalty shootout to gain two points to start the season (1(4) - 1 (2)).
First-year Head Coach Pablo Moreira rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for his first game at the helm. First team keeper Donovan Parisian started in goal behind the backline of Schinieder Mimy, Gabe Dahlin, Chris Mbaï-Assem, and Damario McIntosh. Allan Oyirwoth, Eric Klein, and Javaun Mussenden formed the midfield three behind the attacking trio of Myles Morgan, Cristiano Oliveira, and Jayden Da.
In the 24th minute, Seyi Fakiseyi’s attempted shot pinballed between Parisian, Butts, and Mimy before it crossed the goal line to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead as Mimy was charged with an own goal. Oliveira came close to leveling the game in the 34th minute when he advanced into the box and ripped a shot to the upper-right corner that ricocheted off the crossbar. Oliveira entered the book with a yellow card in the 65th minute after fouling Oluwaseyitan Fakiyesi in transition.
New England’s first change came in the 67th minute as Carlos Zambrano made his Revolution II and professional debut, replacing Oyirwoth.
After several attempts to claw back into the game, Morgan got the job done. In the 70th minute Oliveira broke down the right flank and slotted the ball to the forward just outside the mouth of the goal as Morgan tapped it in to net his first goal with New England.
Another change came in the 83rd minute as Academy prospect Judah Siqueira replaced Morgan
Mbaï-Assem entered the book with a yellow card in stoppage time after tripping Arid Kovac, which led to some extra-curricular shoving between the two. 90 minutes wasn’t enough time to find the winner in this one, as both sides took a point with a 1-1 draw in regulation and looked to earn a second point in the shootout.
Da was first to step to the spot for New England, and he converted with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner. Parisian came up big as he got his hands to Moises Tablante’s shot to the right side of the net to secure the 4-2 shootout victory and two points for New England on opening day.
Revolution II’s homestand continues on Sunday, March 8th, when they host Toronto FC II at 5:00 PM ET.
