Transfer Rumor: USMNT Star Headed to English Premier League
The midfielder will look to make an impact at his new club
After seemingly finding a home with Juventus, Weston McKennie is on the move again. In a rare player-swap move, the midfielder will head to Aston Villa of the English Premier League.
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Brazilian Douglas Luiz will join the Italian giants in a deal that would see Samuel Iling Jr. and McKennie join Villa along with €20m.
McKennie appeared in 34 Serie A matches for Juventus in the 2023-24 season. He seemed to find his footing as he tallied seven assists over the campaign.
After being purchased by Juventus following a loan spell with the club from Schalke 04, McKennie stayed in Italy from 2021 until the beginning of 2023 before another loan; this time with Leeds United.
Competition for minutes won’t exactly be easy for the United States Men’s National Team midfielder. McKennie will need to compete with the likes of Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn, and Youri Tielemans.
Villa is coming off an impressive 2023-24 campaign that saw the club finish (a distant) fourth in the EPL. Maintaining a top-six spot would be a challenge for McKennie’s potential new club but it would be a great environment for him to grow as a player (as long as he receives a healthy dose of minutes).
But right now, McKennie will be focused on the USMNT friendly against Brazil on Wednesday.
