The Story Behind Djordje Petrovic's Absence on Thursday
Here's the latest regarding Djordje Petrovic.
Djordje Petrovic returned to full-team training for the New England Revolution on Saturday, two days before their Round of 16 game against Querétaro FC.
Petrovic only participated in goalkeeping drills ahead of the Revs game against Atlas FC on Thursday. The 23-year-old netminder was not a part of the game-day roster for the shootout victory.
After the game, interim head coach Richie Williams said that the club was “sympathetic with Djordje right now.” He also noted that “conversations with Djordje have been great.”
A source with knowledge of the situation stated that the two parties have had constructive talks recently. The relationship between Petrovic and the Revs remains strong.
The source also stated that FC Nantes of France and Nottingham Forest of England increased their bids on Wednesday. Nottingham’s latest offer was $7 million plus $2 million in add-ons. The Nantes offer was $9 million plus $5 million in add-ons.
According to the source, Petrovic not playing in Thursday’s game was not an act of protest, but a decision made because negotiations with Europe teams were ongoing.
Petrovic could still move overseas this summer, but it’s believed that it would take an offer significantly more than the ones he’s received so far. There’s also a possibility that he’s sold now but remains with the club until January. A third option is that he’s sold in January or next summer.
Petrovic signed with the Revolution on Apr. 6, 2022 as a replacement for Matt Turner. The Serbian quickly became one of the league’s best goalkeepers, finishing as a finalist for the 2022 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award. He’s considered a frontrunner for the distinction this year and currently leads the league in saves (99).
Petrovic has stated on several occasions that he hopes to one day play in a major European league. He has also frequently said that he enjoys representing the Revs.
On Oct 7, 2022, Petrovic told the media, "I'm really enjoying it here and I feel I am progressing every day."
With Petrovic back as a full participant in training, there’s a possibility that he plays in Monday’s Leagues Cup game.
