Revolution II Secure Three Points at Home
Revs II get back into the win column thanks to goals from Liam Butts and Allan Oyirwoth.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II put the bow on a two-game homestand on Saturday when they hosted New York City FC II inside a gloomy Gillette Stadium.
Richie Williams made two changes to the lineup from Wednesday’s draw. JD Gunn made his first start in goal since March 13, as he sat behind the backline of Damario McIntosh, Gabe Dahlin, Victor Souza, and Hesron Barry. Cristiano Oliveira, Allan Oyirwoth, and Eric Klein comprised the middle three behind the attacking trio of Alex Monis, Liam Butts, and Marcos Dias.
Saturday saw Dias’ legacy grow as his inclusion in the starting lineup increased his appearance total to 73, which is now the second-most in Revolution II history.
Gunn came up big in the 6th minute. After getting the ball on the right, NYC lobbed the ball centrally to Sebastiano Musu, who found himself open atop the six-yard box. Musu attempted the simple tap-in, but Gunn was there to make the save and kept the game scoreless.
After a few good attempts, Revs II found the breakthrough in the 18th minute when Butts leaped into the air and headed home a pass from Dias to net his fourth goal of the 2025 season and give Revs II the early lead.
But immediately following the opening goal, Barry fouled Drew Baiera inside the box to award NYCFC II a penalty kick and a chance to level the match. The defender received a yellow card for the offense.
Piero Elias stepped to the spot and lasered a shot to the right side of the goal. Gunn was there to get his hands to the shot, but it ricocheted back into the box as Elias ran onto it and drilled it home to level the match at one apiece.
Oyirwoth nearly got Revs II the lead in the 35th minute when he rocketed a shot to the upper-right corner of the net, but Charlotte’s goalkeeper stretched out to make the save to keep the game level.
Williams executed a triple substitution in the 59th minute as Gevork Diarbian, Damorney Hutchinson, and Javaun Mussenden replaced Monis, Butts, and Oliveira.
Oyirwoth came up big for Revs II in the 71st minute. After receiving a pass inside the box, Hutchinson tapped the ball back into a pocket of space just outside the box. Oyirwoth ran onto it and rocketed a shot to the left side and in to give Revs II the 2-1 lead.
Despite the treacherous conditions, Revolution II held on to secure all three points following a 2-1 victory at home. Saturday’s win sees Revs II vault up to second place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points on a 3-1-2 record with two shootout victories.
Revolution II will now head out of town for a five-game road trip that will see the second team face Toronto FC II, NYRB II, Chattanooga FC, NYCFC II, and Chicago Fire II.
