New England Revolution II:
It was a rollercoaster of an outing on May 26th when Revs II welcomed club legend Jake Rozhansky and New York City FC II to Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.
Things got off to a rough start in the sixth minute when Piero Elias cut a ball to the left side of the box to Chris Tiao, who slotted the ball into the net to put NYCFC II up 1-0.
Marcos Dias came to the rescue in the 23rd minute when Maciel got a hold of the ball and lobbed it from deep in the Revs II attacking half toward Dias. Dias outran his marker, got a touch on the ball, and proceeded to slot it past Tomas Romero and in to level the match at one apiece.
Things went from bad to worse as a penalty kick from Piero Elias and a stunning goal from Taylor Calheira had NYCFC II rolling with a 3-1 lead.
While many teams would fold, Revs II kept fighting. Their fight eventually paid off in the 80th minute when Gevork Diarbian cut a ball centrally to Liam Butts, who slotted it home to net his first professional goal and shrink the deficit to one!
That deficit was slashed in the 87th minute when Patrick Leal’s corner kick found the head of Eric Klein, who headed it into the back of the net to level the game at three apiece in the closing minutes.
Both sides earned the point and looked to gain a second in the penalty shootout. Thanks to saves from Max Weinstein and goals from Marcos Dias, Gevork Diarbian, Alex Monis, and Eric Klein, Revolution II secured the additional point thanks to a 4-3 shootout victory.
Revolution II sits in 12th place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points on a 3-5-2 record with two shootout victories.
Chattanooga FC:
Chattanooga’s inaugural MLS NEXT Pro has gotten off to a tremendous start for head coach Rod Underwood and the players. They enter Saturday’s match in second place in the Eastern Conference with 22 points on a 5-2-4 record with three shootout victories.
Their last outing against Atlanta United was a roller coaster. After Atlanta found the opening goal in the ninth minute, Chattanooga scored two unanswered goals and looked poised to pick up all three points. That was until stoppage time when Farid Sar-Sar fouled Jacob Williams inside the box. Javier Armas stepped to the spot and drilled the ball into the net to tie the game and force a shootout. Chattanooga secured the additional point following a 5-3 shootout victory.
Jesus Ibarra is one name Revs II has to keep an eye on. The 26-year-old forward currently leads Chattanooga in goals with five over ten appearances. Revs II also has to watch out for Jalen James and Alex McGrath, who have both scored four goals in 2024.
Previous Meetings:
Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between Chattanooga and New England.
They’ll meet one more time in the regular season when Chattanooga pays a visit to Gillette Stadium on September 21st.
