Revolution Amputee's Secure Second Place at US Amputee Soccer Cup
The host team secured second place after going undefeated in four matches!
The New England Revolution Amputee Soccer Team, plus teams from Miami, New York, Chicago, and Colorado converged at the Brigham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts this past weekend as the venue played host to the 2024 US Amputee Soccer Cup.
The Revs saw action in the competition’s opening match as they faced off against a tough Miami side. Miami wasted no time finding the first goal, as they found the net six minutes into the game.
New England was unbothered though as a well-placed pass from Nico Calabria found Nzirimwo Musabwa, who slotted it past the keeper to level things at one apiece.
Musabwa and Calabria linked again just before halftime. Musabwa lobbed a ball into the box from midfield that found the head of Calabria, who struck it past the keeper to give the Revolution the lead heading into halftime.
Miami found an equalizer minutes into the second half as things ended in a 2-2 draw between New England and Miami.
The Revolution’s second game of Day One saw them square off against Chicago.
New England got off to a good start, finding themselves up 4-0 just seven minutes into the game thanks to braces from Musabwa and Calabria. Chicago did shrink the deficit to three following their 13th-minute goal, but it was all New England after.
Musabwa found his hat trick as he extended the Revs lead to four in the 21st minute. Calabria found his hat trick in the 28th minute when he extended the Revolution’s lead to five.
A handball call in the 30th minute led to Angelito stepping to the spot and drilling a ball home to make it 7-1 Revolution. Calabria netted his fourth goal of the day in the 39th minute as New England’s lead pushed to seven.
Angelito found the net again in the 45th minute after Musabwa kept the ball in play and cut it back to Angelito as the Revs found themselves up 10-1. New England’s lead extended to double digits in the 48th minute when Angelito found his hat trick after he and Musabwa found themselves two-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Day One also saw New York and Colorado play to a 1-1 draw, Miami secured a 2-1 win over New York, and Colorado secured a 4-0 victory over Chicago.
New England’s first match of Day Two saw them faceoff against Colorado.
Calabria opened the scoring early for the Revs as his long-distance shot found the back of the net and put New England up 1-0 in the 13th minute. Calabria netted another goal in the 30th minute when Musabwa played a ball atop the box, which he got on top of and drilled home to give New England a 2-0 lead.
Angelito was at the right place at the right time in the 39th minute as he rebounded Musabwa’s shot and found the back of the net to propel New England to a 3-0 win.
New England’s final match of the competition saw them face New York. Both sides found the net once each and walked away with a 1-1 draw.
Day Two saw Miami secure a 16-0 win over Chicago, New York picking up a 3-0 win over Chicago, and Miami securing a 4-1 win versus Colorado.
After two days of exciting action in Cambridge, Miami walked away with the title. New England secured second place while New York took home third.
On top of their second-place finish, Revolution goalkeeper Corey Laycock won the Golden Glove Award.
