Recap: Revs II Shut-Out Union 2 on the Road
The Revs will look to keep the momentum going as they enter the final stretch for the 2023 MLS Next Pro season.
New England Revolution II traveled to Subaru Park on Sunday night for an Eastern Conference showdown with Philadelphia Union 2. The Revs made four changes to the line-up from their last match against Toronto as Colby Quiñónes, Jack Panyotou, Joshua Bolma, and Olger Escobar returned to the eleven.
New England came within inches of taking the lead in the 27th minute after a quick counterattack saw Bolma played into Philadelphia’s box, but his shot was denied by the goal post. In the 40th minute, it was redemption for Bolma as he found the breakthrough for New England, curling the ball past Philadelphia’s keeper with a powerful shot from just outside of the box. Kudos to Jordan Adebayo-Smith for a great display of skill and passing leading up to the goal.
The Revs made a pair of substitutions in the 52nd after Escobar went down with an injury that saw him replaced by Malcolm Fry while Marcos Dias entered the match for Patrick Leal.
Dias ended up making an instant impact as he doubled the visitors lead in the 54th minute, being played into Philadelphia’s box off of a pass from Panayotou that split two defenders and allowed for Dias to slot the ball just past the keeper.
It looked as though Fry would add to New England’s lead in the 67th minute, but ultimately saw his attempt called offside before the shot had even left his foot. Dias closed out the match for New England in the 86th minute, his second of the night coming in the form of a beautiful strike from inside Philadelphia’s box once again that the keeper had little chance of stopping.
Following the goal the Revs made their final changes of the night, with Tiago Suarez and Ben Awashie entering the match for Bolma and Panayotou respectively.
An acrobatic save by Campuzano in the dying minutes of extra time preserved the shutout for New England, as the final whistle was blown just after Philadelphia’s last effort corner kick.
With Sunday’s win the Revs improved to a 13-5-7 record with 51 points, trailing Crown Legacy FC by just four points as they enter the final three regular season matches for 2023.
New England returns home on September 1st to take on Huntsville City FC at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM EST and the match will be streamed on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass.
