Recap: Revolution II 3 - 1 Inter Miami CF II
Ouellette opener sees Revs II get back into the win column!
Sunday was the beginning of a new era for New England Revolution II as they welcomed Inter Miami CF II to Mark A. Ouellette Stadium on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in the club’s first home game outside the confines of Gillette Stadium.
Revs II entered Sunday in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with five points on a 1-3-1 record with one shootout victory. Williams and Revolution II’s last outing saw them wrap up a three-game road trip north of the border where they earned two points thanks to a Marcos Dias equalizer in first-half stoppage time and a shootout victory.
It’s been a decent start for Federico Higuaín and Miami. The club entered Sunday’s contest in fifth place with 10 points on a 3-1-1 record. After starting the 2024 season unbeaten in their first four matches, their last outing saw their first loss against league newcomers Chattanooga FC.
There were no changes to the lineup as J.D. Gunn started in goal behind the backline of Hesron Barry, Tiago Suarez, Victor Souza, and Eric Klein. Maciel and Patrick Leal served as defensive midfielders behind Gevork Diarbian, Jack Panayotou, and Alex Monis, while Marcos Dias was the lone striker.
Klein flashed some footwork inthe 14th minute when he generated space between the ball and his marker as he whipped a cross centrally. Klein’s cross looked set to fall to the head of Dias, but Tyler Hall was there to head the ball away from danger.
After a flurry of action inside Inter Miami’s box, the ball fell to the feet of Patrick Leal, who slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Revolution II a 1-0 lead 20 minutes in. JD Gunn then came up huge for Revolution II in the 22nd minute as Alejandro Flores rifled a shot from a distance. Gunn made an incredible leap as he stretched to touch the ball over the top-right corner of the goal.
The 30th minute saw Revolution II execute a perfect corner kick. Dias leaped into the air, got a head to it, and sent the ball to the left side of the box. Dias’ header found the head of Diarbian, who headed the ball past Jensen and in the net to double Revs II lead.
Gunn came up big again in the 37th minute when Alejandro Flores lobbed a ball forward to Bryan Destin, who darted past the backline and onto the ball. Destin attempted to slot a ball to the lower-left side, but Gunn positioned himself to make the save, but the deflection bounced back toward the goal. Thankfully for the goalkeeper, the deflection rattled off the woodwork and away from danger.
After sprinting up the center of the pitch in the 44th minute, Panayotou flashed the footwork as he put his opponent on skates and drilled a left-footed shot from inches outside the box into the back of the net to give Revolution II their third goal of the first half.
A 54th-minute free-kick saw misfortune come New England’s way. Miami lobbed the left-flank free kick centrally, where the Revs II backline attempted to clear it out of the box. Unfortunately, the clearance fell to Yannick Bright, who slotted the ball through a sea of bodies and into the net to reduce their deficit to two.
Williams’ first change came in the 58th minute when Joshua Bolma replaced Diarbian. Two changes then came in the 75th minute when Damario McIntosh and Andrej Bjelajac came on for Monis and Dias.
Souza’s night came to an early end after the sophomore defender was issued a questionable red card in the 79th minute after making contact with Ryan Carmichael while trying to clear the ball sent forward. Down to 10 men, Revs II locked in for the final 10 minutes as they held on to secure their second win of the 2024 campaign following a 3-1 victory over Inter Miami CF II.
Revolution II will look to continue its winning ways when they host Chicago Fire II inside Gillette Stadium on Saturday, May 4th at 1:00 PM ET.
