The New England Revolution lost 4-0 to Charlotte FC on Saturday afternoon. It was the club’s 17th loss of the season and has been one of the worst seasons in Revolution history.
What are we doing? It is the end of September. The team is not playing well and they have not played well all season. The team is falling apart, not only in the way they play, but in the complete lack of effort and loss of control as could be seen when Dylan Borrero was sent off.
Head coach Caleb Porter needs to go. I take no pleasure in asking for someone to lose their job. But as a Revolution fan, today was an inflection point. Today was painful to watch as someone that cares about this club. It has not been good enough.
The team has not improved all season and they are not giving full effort. They have seemingly given up. It is unacceptable and Porter needs to go.
As Charlie Davies said in the 98.5 Sports Hub post-game show to the Revolution players, have some respect for the supporters in New England. I would like to expand that beyond the players to the club ownership. Speaking of them, where is ownership? Where is team president Brian Bilello? Who is going to answer for the state of the club? Is this acceptable to them? Is one of the worst seasons in team history acceptable?
I don’t care about the excuses of injuries, the Concacaf Champions Cup, the crowded schedule, the calls not going the Revs way.
Deal with it.
Good teams deal with tough situations and overcome them. They don’t sit there and make excuses. Has there been a press conference this season when Porter has not made excuses or when Sporting Director Curt Onalfo has been accountable?
What are we doing?
The Revs have 5 games left in the regular season. Porter needs to go now. An interim coach needs to try and improve the morale for the rest of the season.
This team has talented players and The Revs are not getting enough out of the them. Instead of picking a coach just because of their name and resume, there also needs to be an understanding of the strengths of the roster. Someone that is not going to come in and try to implement a new system that works against the best characteristics of the players.
It is not good enough. Not by a long shot. The Revolution organization needs to answer to the fans. Their silence is deafening.
The history of this organization suggests that a relatively recently hired coach with some pedigree will get at least one more transfer window, right? It would be great to hear from someone in authority other than Porter. Onalfo or Bilello coming out at this point, though, could have shades of Mike Burns final appearance being a foreshadowing of his exit weeks later.
This season has been a disaster by every measure. There is no evidence that the coach has had anything but a negative impact across the board. You could say that with the exception of Esmir, who the coach likely would not play if he had other options, no players saw any growth this year. Pretty much every player performed worse under this coach. The excitement of the academy and bringing in youth to supplement the roster was snuffed out under this coach. He tanked Buck’s value. While the roster did need some improvement there was more than enough talent at hand not to flounder all year and land at the bottom of the table. Then there is the Caleb Porter’s attitude and apparent arrogance. He is so off putting that it makes it hard to support a team that with him as the coach. I am not not one to just blame a coach nor do I like to see folks fired, but I very much would like to see a change. This organization needs a refresh.
