Isaac Angking Out For Remainder of 2024 Season
Devastating news for the midfielder
Hot off the heels of a statement win at home against USL Championship rivals Hartford Athletic, Rhode Island FC announced that midfielder Isaac Angking suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during August 3rd’s away draw against Detroit City FC.
Angking, 24, came to Rhode Island FC in late April to sstrengthen a midfield that was at the time, struggling mightily. He’s served mostly as a substitute since that time but has been very effective in the limited play he’s been given.
In 83 minutes played across eight USL Championship appearances, the Providence, Rhode Island native had scored two goals and added a further assist, most notably when he scored in the fifth minute of second-half extra-time against Indy Eleven at Beirne Stadium to extend RIFC’s then unbeaten run to four matches (it ultimately ended at eight, also against Indy Eleven).
It’s been a difficult career for the Rhode Island native so far and this injury cannot help matters. Angking last played for the Columbus Crew II of MLS Next Pro in 2022 before being signed by the Tide in April after a year off and has played for six clubs in total across four leagues and three cups.
It did not look good when Angking went down. He had just come on as a substitute in a sweltering match where Rhode Island FC was trailing and he fell to the ground in obvious distress without contact and with little time left to play on the clock. Rhode Island FC went on to draw the match and extend its unbeaten run to eight matches thanks to midfielder Clay Holstad’s thunderstrike but Angking had to be subbed off with the trainer’s assistance despite being a sub himself. Now, what had then simply been the worst of the club’s fears has become grim reality.
Angking will require surgery for the torn ACL and is expected to miss not only the remainder of this USL Championship season but the next six-nine months as he recovers from this difficult injury.
Rhode Island FC, without Angking, will next play at home at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island against Oakland Roots SC on Saturday, August 17th, at 7:30 pm ET.
