Hearts Of Pine Ink First Player in Club History
Michel Poon-Angeron will be forever known as the Hearts’ first signed player
Michel Poon-Angeron, a 23-year-old defensive midfielder from Trinidad and Tobago, is the first player on Bobby Murphy’s Hearts of Pine roster.
Poon-Angeron, a 5’ 10” right-footed Trinidad & Tobago International, has 17 caps and one goal with the senior team and has been described by some as a “live wire” type of player.
The midfielder was coached by legendary Argentina striker Hernán Crespo at the U-19 and U-20 sides at Banfield Academy in Argentina in 2019-2020. It’s here that Poon-Angeron gives credit for his physicality and work rate as a defensive midfielder, training six days a week. He’s not afraid of a strong tackle, collecting the ball, and looking to start an attack.
After the Banfield Academy, he played with Banfield II until COVID-19 cut his Argentina journey short. Poon-Angeron came back home to Trinidad & Tobago and signed with AC Port of Spain in January of 2023. The midfielder would be a part of an AC Port of Spain side that would win the 2024 TT Premier League.
Now the midfielder’s journey brings him to Portland, Maine and a chance to travel the country playing the best USL has to offer both in league play and Jäegermeister Cup play. He’s bringing with him a controlled aggression approach to the game that is built on a Trinidad & Tobago/Argentinian strong foundation.
Is it coincidence that Gabe Hoffmann-Johnson, a defensive midfielder in his playing days, hired a defensive midfielder head coach in Bobby Murphy, who signed the first player to the Hearts of Pine…..a defensive midfielder? Maybe it just makes sense that you go out and get that defensive midfielder who is willing to throw himself into a tackle for his team and start an attack for his front line to get some good looks at goal.
