The New England Revolution have signed veteran defender Ben Sweat.
Sweat, 31, was most recently with Sporting KC, joining the club before the 2022 season. He played 25 games (22 starts) for the club before being released on April 5, 2023. Sweat’s last action with Sporting KC earned him a second-half red card against the Seattle Sounders on Matchday 5.
This is the left back’s eighth season in Major League Soccer. Past stops include the Columbus Crew, New York City FC, Inter Miami CF, and Austin FC. Sweat has 1 goal and 14 assists in 121 regular-season appearances (106 starts).
“[Sweat] is an experienced player,” head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena said. “We think a good player. He’s got plenty of experience in the league. He gives us another veteran to fit in. We think we needed a little bit more help in the left back position so he’s a good addition to our team.”
The Revs, who are currently tied for first in the Eastern Conference, host Sporting KC, Sweat’s former team, on Saturday.
UPDATE: Sweat is signed through the 2023 MLS season, with an option for 2024, and will occupy a supplemental roster slot. He will be available for selection on Saturday.
Sounds like Jones is leaving in the summer.
How was Ben been lately? I remember reading not too long ago that fans weren’t high on him
