Boston Legacy FC’s Sophia Lowenberg is heading to the Gainbridge Super League for the rest of the year. The rookie will be on loan to Brooklyn FC until the end of December, effective immediately.

Lowenberg signed a two-year contract with BLFC and had been with the team as she finished her last semester at Boston College. She debuted on May 30 in the final minutes against Kansas City Current.

“Sophia has made real progress since joining us from Boston College and has been a really positive presence within our training group,” director of recruitment Edward Gallagher said in a press release. “She has a great personality, has adapted well to the demands of the NWSL environment, and now we feel competitive game time at the professional level will be key to the next stage of her development. We’ll remain in close contact with Sophia and Brooklyn throughout the loan, and our staff will continue to support her progression as we help prepare her for the next steps in 2027.”

The 22-year-old played as a left back in her single appearance with Boston and has plenty of defensive experience, but her natural position is a six. Head coach Filipa Patão has acknowledged that Lowenberg has stiff competition in Annie Karich, who has played nearly every minute in the midfield. With the recent addition of Lilly Reale on the back line, vying for playing time would only be a tougher battle.

Prior to the NWSL break, Lowenberg said she wanted to improve certain skills like decision-making and pass completion.

Brooklyn FC’s first game of the season will be on Saturday, August 15, against Lexington SC and will be streamed on Peacock.
