Portland Hearts of Pine's sophomore season started positively, as they defeated the New York Cosmos 3-1 at Hinchliffe Stadium.
Tino Georgallides broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when he headed in Masashi Wada's cross. The game returned to level terms in the 73rd minute, but Jay Tee Kamara found Wada three minutes later to restore Hearts' lead. Aboubacar Camara secured three points by finishing Ollie Wright's feed in the 87th minute.
