We will soon know who will be part of Caleb Porter’s coaching staff with the New England Revolution.
Sporting Director Curt Onalfo noted during Thursday’s media availability that the organization has “worked tirelessly to make sure that Caleb has a staff that he's comfortable with so that he can hit the ground running.”
The plan is to reveal the staff next week but Porter gave the media a glimpse into what he’s thinking during Thursday’s introductory press conference.
“I've learned, being a head coach now quite a long time, what I need,” Porter said. “So, there'll be a couple staff members that were with me in Columbus that will join.”
Clint Peay will also be part of Porter’s staff. Peay has been with the organization since 2019, serving as the head coach of Revs II before being named as the interim head coach of the first team on Sep. 12.
“I always think it's important to maintain some continuity,” Porter stated. “So, we're going to be keeping Clint Peay on my staff. Had several conversations with him, really liked those conversations.
“He's worked with the team. He knows the players. He's obviously been with Revs II, he knows the young guys. It's good to have some intel with someone here on the ground, so he'll be on my staff along with two other assistant coaches.”
With Peay gone, the second team will be looking for a new permanent head coach. Marcelo Santos could be a candidate after being an assistant on Peay’s staff.
But one person whose future is still unknown is Richie Williams, who joined the Revs as a first-team assistant in 2019. He was named as the interim head coach when Bruce Arena was put on administrative leave.
“In terms of Richie Williams, he's a valued part of our organization, and we are looking at how we're going to incorporate him into our organization moving forward,” Onalfo said.
That leaves Kevin Hitchcock. The notorious goalkeeper coach was reported to be on an expiring contract heading into this offseason but according to the man himself, he will be back in 2024.
So while there will be some new faces on the sidelines in 2024, there will also be some familiar ones hoping to right the ship that is the Revolution.
I thought Williams contract was up at the end of the year.
Supposedly he was told by Arena early last season that he wouldn't be returning. Is he only returning because letting him go might put the Revs in legal jeopardy???
It's clear the players despise him - having him anywhere near the team can only disrupt things.
Keeping Richie not a good. He caused a lot crap last year. But he seems to be Curt Onalfo buddy now with his comment.
