Rhode Island FC announced that it has signed its first mascot, Chip the harbor seal. The harbor seal was established as Rhode Island’s first official state marine mammal by the Rhode Island General Assembly in 2016.
“Having a top-notch fan experience is a key priority for all of us at Rhode Island FC. Chip was created with our fans’ input and is an exciting and fun addition to our ever-growing Rhode Island FC team. Chip provides us with an even more direct connection to the bay and the ocean. We look forward to seeing Chip cheer for our club in the stands with our fans starting in March,” said Brett Luy, President of Rhode Island FC.
Rhode Island FC’s Chip was designed to reflect the state’s unique history. He has thirteen whiskers in honor of the thirteen stars of the state flag, itself a nod to Rhode Island’s status as the last of the 13 colonies to sign the Constitution, his nose is shaped like the state’s anchor emblem, and his spots take the shape of the RIFC club crest.
Chip will make his first public appearances this weekend, at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Soccer Championships at Rhode Island College on Saturday and Sunday, November 11th and 12th.
