Peay, Romney Provide Messages For Fans After a Difficult Week
Dave Romney: “Don’t lose faith. We’re not losing faith. We have all the confidence in the world that we can still get this together with the group of guys that we have."
The New England Revolution are staying optimistic despite a difficult stretch that saw them overhaul their coaching staff before losing 2-1 to the last place Colorado Rapids.
Earlier this week, the Revs said goodbye to Bruce Arena, Shalrie Joseph, and Dave van den Bergh. While he’s still with the club, Richie Williams has been given time off and his role is currently undetermined.
As a result of the changes, interim head coach Clint Peay and interim assistant coach Marcelo Santos roamed the sidelines when the Revs traveled to DICK’S Sporting Goods Park on Saturday.
The home side scored in the 48th minute when Cole Bassett nodded home a free kick. Calvin Harris doubled the Rapids’ lead in the 62nd minute before Omar Gonazlez scored a stoppage time consolation goal off a corner kick.
It was not the performance the Revs were looking for.
“It’s extremely disappointing,” Dave Romney said. “We’re in an extremely tight race in the East and points are extremely valuable at this time of the season. We were fully prepared to come in here and get a win because we expect that of ourselves and the quality of our team.
“We just didn’t get it done tonight. We weren’t good enough as a team, individually and collectively. That’s just on us.”
The Revs are now third in the Eastern Conference after being jumped by Orlando City. Expect more movement in the coming weeks as five points separate spots two through six.
Like most teams, the Revs have six games left to play. Peay remains positive about his team despite everything that’s happened recently.
“Listen, I think we still have a lot to play for,” Peay said. “I think the players are still obviously very committed to the goal of winning the cup, and that's what we're going to strive for each and every day moving forward.”
As one can imagine, many Revs fans were disheartened by Saturday’s performance against the Rapids, who had only collected three wins prior to Saturday night.
After the game, Romney was asked what he would say to fans who are starting to lose faith.
“Don’t lose faith. We’re not losing faith,” Romney remarked. “We have all the confidence in the world that we can still get this together with the group of guys that we have.
“We still have guys out with injury so once we get everybody back hopefully [we can] get clicking again. I think we’re a dangerous team in MLS [Cup] Playoffs, which are a knockout-style tournament.”
The Revs now return to Foxboro before heading to Chicago for their second of three road games.
This will be Peay’s first time leading a full week of training, which could give him an opportunity to put his stamp on the team.
“I think we all feel that, obviously, this past week was a little bit abbreviated,” Peay said. “A full week will be good and I think will help us prepare in a better way as we move forward.”
