MLS Commissioner Don Garber Comments On Bruce Arena's Return to Coaching
He didn't say much though
While Bruce Arena is back on the sidelines, a lot remains unknown about why he was sidelined in 2023. On Friday we got an answer from MLS commissioner Don Garber (sort of).
Arena will be patrolling the sidelines as head coach and sporting director of the San Jose Earthquakes. It is his first job since he was suspended by the New England Revolution and investigated by MLS for inappropiate and insensitive comments.
In an article authored by Jeff Carlisle, Arena did shed some light on what caused him to be sidelined.
“It was just staff joking around with each other in private,” Arena told ESPN. “I accept any of the criticism and I'm moving forward."
A voice that previously hadn’t been heard was that of Garber. The league has been quite silent since Arena’s hiring regarding his past incident.
While Garber refused to comment when asked about the findings of the investigation into Arena, but did say that he satasfied the leagues requirements to return to the touchline.
“I appreciate the question, but it's not something that I'm going to talk about,” Garber said when asked by The Blazing Musket about the process Arena went through to be able to coach again. “Obviously, Bruce would not have been approved to coach in Major League Soccer if he didn't satisfy whatever standards and whatever things that we wanted him to satisfy.”
I’m sure the players headed to the quakes are thrilled to be getting off a sinking ship. It’s hard to not see how this plays out poorly for the revs.
That’s such a “Imagine whatever you’d like for him to have done before coaching again. That’s what he did.” answer lol
