Man With Big Hat Promises To Wear Bigger Hat if Revs Win MLS Cup
"If the Revs win the MLS Cup, and there is a bigger hat, I will wear it.”
Steve has been a New England Revolution fan for over ten years. Once a regular in the Fort with his significant other, he relocated to the Optum Field Lounge when his wife’s job required her to work Saturdays.
The move presented an opportunity.
“We’ve got good seats and I said, ‘We’ve got to get something goofy to wear,’” Steve told The Blazing Musket in an exclusive interview. “Green Bay has cheeseheads, Buffalo has foam wing hats, I’ve seen some chili dog hats at FCC games. There are obviously some tricorn hats in the crowd, but that’s way too serious of a look for me to pull off.”
He ultimately went with a giant Revs hat.
If you watched Saturday’s game against Nashville SC, you likely saw Steve behind one of the goals. He was the one wearing an oversized red cap.
Just to make sure we understood the situation correctly, TBM asked Steve if he has a normal-sized head and if the hat is, in fact, large.
“That sounds right,” Steve said. “I’ve never been a hat person, just don’t like how they fit on my head. But if we’re ever in a store and we spot something that would look silly on my head, it goes right on.”
Steve was obviously waiting to find the right hat, and it certainly looks like he did. The headwear he donned this weekend looks natural on him, though he confessed that he doesn’t wear it during his everyday life.
He does plan to continue to bring it to Revs games, noting “a few of our friends with Team Ops have already mentioned that they love it.” Steve isn’t sure if any Revs players noticed the hat, but a few Nashville players did take a second look.
“I think Joe Willis did a triple-take,” Steve said.
The hat was purchased on Nogginboss.com, a company that was featured on Shark Tank. Steve learned about the apparel after seeing Brian Robinson of the Washington Commanders wear one in the locker room last season.
After ordering the hat, Steve found a Revs patch that he sewed on himself. He explained, “The goal was to get a few laughs, and I think I accomplished that.”
It’s also a way for him to show his fandom.
Steve listed Djordje Petrovic as his favorite player, conceding that it may be recency bias but “it’s unreal how much of the net he can cover. I’ve never seen anything like that.”
His favorite memory was when Andrew Farrell scored his first goal, saying, “I just remember the weather being dreary and the stadium being empty, but the crowd exploded like I had never seen before.”
Steve’s hat has become a memory of sorts for some Revs fans, as social media was abuzz about the man sitting behind the net. He likes that his hat reminded someone of Norm Macdonald’s impression of Burt Reynolds from Saturday Night Live.
“I like the Turd Ferguson comparison. That’s the humor I’m going for,” Steve said.
Some fans commented that Hat Man could be this generation’s Horse Guy, a horse/fan who popped up on broadcasts with a horse sign.
Steve, a modest man just looking to bring on a few chuckles, doesn’t want to compare himself to Horse Guy.
“Horse Guy is a legend and he was in a great location and had impeccable timing,” Steve said. “He also had the benefit of having a mask and being able to hide it if he didn’t want to compromise his alter-ego. I’m just a guy with a large head and a bigger hat. And yes, the hat will be back.”
Future games could include new theatrics. Steve notably was caught on the stadium screen giving a well-timed thumbs down while Willis prepared for a goal kick.
“I saw the giant hat behind Willis on the far screen and that’s all I could come up with,” Steve said. “It took months to come up with the hat idea, I’m not good on the spot.”
“I’ve gotta add to my repertoire, any suggestions?”
The only suggestion TBM had for Steve is that he should get a bigger hat every time the Revs win. It would be costly, sure, but it would also be fun to see.
Steve nixed the idea but is open to the possibility of getting a larger hat if the Revs win the elusive cup.
“That’s tough, this is the biggest wearable baseball hat I’m aware of,” Steve said when TBM proposed getting a bigger hat after each win. “I wonder what the limit is that they’d allow into the stadium. If the Revs win the MLS Cup, and there is a bigger hat, I will wear it.”
