Dylan Borrero Not Playing Against Montreal Was A "Coach's Decision"
Caleb Porter: "I had a conversation with him and I will keep that between us. But it was a coach’s decision why he didn’t start and why he didn’t play today.”
Dylan Borrero not playing in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with CF Montreal was a “coach’s decision,” according to New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter.
Borrero contributed 58 minutes in Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Orlando City SC with two of the goals happening before he was subbed off. The midfielder was spotted exhibiting some negative body language during the game.
Though he was on the bench against Montreal, Borrero didn’t see the field.
Porter opted to bring in Alhassan Yusuf for Matt Polster in the 67th minute, Ema Boateng and Giacomo Vrioni for Luca Langoni and Bobby Wood in the 71st minute, and Ian Harkes and Nacho Gil for Mark-Anthony Kaye and Esmir Bajraktarevic in the 82nd minute.
During his post-game press conference, Porter was asked if he spoke to Borrero and the reason why the Colombian didn’t play.
“Yeah, I had a conversation with him and I will keep that between us,” Porter said. “But it was a coach’s decision why he didn’t start and why he didn’t play today.”
In the same answer, Porter discussed effort, which was a talking point before the game.
There were four differences in the starting lineups used during the four-day span. On Wednesday, Wood, Bajraktarevic, Polster, and Xavier Arreaga started over Vrioni, Borrero, Harkes, and Tim Parker. Vrioni and Harkes entered as subs while Borrero and Parker stayed on the bench.
“We need guys who are going to work hard on both sides of the ball for us to be where we want to be long-term,” Porter said. “We need 11 guys that are going to defend and work hard, and we didn’t get that against Orlando. We got that much better today.”
The Revs have a quick turnaround as they visit Charlotte FC on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 pm.
This might be the first time he's publicly said something completely logical, followed through on it and not contradicted himself on all season.
