Up The Gals in Green!
Vermont Green Football Club has announced that the club will field a women’s team for an exhibition match on June 22nd, 2024 at 6:00 pm at Virtue Field.
The match will serve as a testament to the club’s commitment to developing the game in the Green Mountain State but also serve as a statement of intent to field a full-time team in the coming years.
“We’re so excited to feature this historic match in June. It will serve as a celebration of women’s soccer in our state—honoring the history and enthusiasm for the sport here—and show our commitment to growing the women’s game” said Vermont Green FC co-founder Matthew Wolff. “Knowing our community, we think this could be one of the biggest events of the summer.”
According to the club, The Green have already begun the process of exploring the path to adding a full-time women’s program.
“The club will refer to a Women’s Soccer Advisory Committee for guidance in the process,” a press release stated. “The committee will feature the University of Vermont women’s soccer coach Kristi Huizenga and U.S. Women’s National Team World Cup winner Sam Mewis. The match will be the first of yearly women’s exhibition matches until the permanent team is formed.”
The team is already starting to take shape as the University of Vermont’s Jill Brody, Laney Ross, Bailey Ayer, Maddy Cronin, and Pittsford, Vt. native Olivia White have already committed to play for the club.
“Our goal has always been to build the best soccer club for our community. We believe we can attract top quality players that will want to play in the professional atmosphere that Virtue Field has become known for.” said Sporting Director Adam Pfeifer. “This is an important step for continuing to push the limits of what we can achieve at Vermont Green FC, and we look forward to a very special night of soccer in Vermont.”
