Arena Says Borrero Feels "More Comfortable Out Wide"

Arena: “We've tried one or two games where we've had him positioned as a striker as well, but he feels more comfortable out wide.”

New England Revolution head coach Bruce Arena is looking for Dylan Borrero to be “a little more steady game-in-and-game-out.”

The 21-year-old attacker is as dynamic as they come because he’s typically looking to take on opponents and go to goal. Borrero had a goal and assist against the Houston Dynamo on Mar. 4, prompting Dynamo head coach Ben Olsen to call him a “handful.”

On Tuesday, Arena provided Sam Minton with some insight regarding Borrero’s development.

“Well, he is a young player and there’s been too many peaks and valleys,” Arena said. “I actually talked to him about that today – he needs to elevate his game where he’s a little more steady game-in-and-game-out. And that takes a little time, he’s still young, the league is new to him, and playing the sport at this level is new to him. So, it’s going to take a little time.”

I asked Bruce Arena yesterday about Dylan Borrero earning a national team call up and his performance so far this season. Arena said that he has talked to Borrero about being more consistent. #NERevs

In an injury-laden 2022, Borrero had three goals and two assists in 602 minutes. The attacker is looking to provide much more in his first full season with the Revs.

Recent lineup sheets have listed Borrero as a striker, but the Colombian has a tendency to drop into the midfield and play wide. It’s an area of the field that Borrero is familiar with.

“We've tried one or two games where we've had him positioned as a striker as well, but he feels more comfortable out wide,” Arena said. “So, regardless of how he looked on a piece of paper, he plays in the wide areas of the field and that's where he's more comfortable.”
