The question that every fan wants answered remains unanswered as the New England Revolution head into the offseason.
Revolution legend Andrew Farrell is eligible for free agency in 2026 as his contract contains an option. At 33 years old, he has played 13 MLS seasons and 344 games.
But in 2025, Farrell played less than 100 minutes in MLS, with the bulk of his minutes coming after the departure of Caleb Porter. While Revolution fans will gladly have Farrell back, the question is will the veteran decide to hang up his boots?
“We have exit meetings next week at some point, so [I’ll] figure out what’s next from there,” Farrell said when asked about his future. “I’m not sure.”
With limited minutes in 2025, a lot of Farrell’s contributions came in the form of being a leader in the locker room and competing on the training ground.
“I just want to, obviously, pass on my experience in certain situations and just try to encourage guys in certain situations,” Farrell said. “Obviously, the season didn’t go like we wanted to. It’s just keeping everybody level-headed and focused. The veterans I played with my first couple years, that’s what they did. The Matt Reis, AJ Soares, Jose Goncalves helped me in my career early on.”
One player who was profoundly impacted by Farrell was young center back Keegan Hughes. The 25-year-old all of a sudden found himself with a first-team deal and complimented Farrell for helping him improve, even when the veteran was competing for minutes with Hughes.
“Farrell is a fucking legend,” Hughes said. “ I saw him on social media. I saw a super happy guy and he was exactly what I thought he was gonna be. Even this year, a lot of the time we were competing for the same position or the same spot on the bench and you couldn’t tell that at one point. He helped me so much this year, whether it was in training or even tonight. It was so fun to play with him in front of me. He’s just a great guy.”
If this is the last time that Farrell has played for New England, he will be dearly missed. His smile lit up any room he stepped into, and the passion he had for the game was unmatched. Whatever is next for Farrell, he will have a whole lot of people cheering him on.
