There is a new women's soccer team in New England, albeit with a familiar name. The New England Mutiny will join the USL W League in 2026. Established in 1999, the Mutiny is one of the oldest women's soccer teams in the history of U.S. Soccer.
The two crowning achievements of the organization came in 2004 and 2012. In 2004, the Mutiny played China’s Women’s National Team two weeks before the Olympics. The match was played in western Massachusetts in front of 4,000 fans. The Mutiny held a 3-1 lead after 60 minutes before eventually losing 4-3 in the match. Additionally, at the time in 2012, the Mutiny became the only amateur women's soccer team to defeat a professional women's soccer team when it defeated the Boston Breakers.
“The formation of the USL W league Northeast Division gives us exactly what New England fans want: more high-level soccer at Lusitano Stadium,” said Club President Carlos Chaves. “The Mutiny has always provided an elite pathway for its players and the W League aligns us with that mission by allowing our players to compete nationally on a professional stage.”
The Mutiny joins the likes of Hartford Athletic, Vermont Green FC, and AC Connecticut in the Northeast Division.
