It strikes me as odd that they've come up with this as a way to get Polster on the ball in central midfield. Would think...playing him as a center mid would accomplish that goal. Which says nothing to why he's more valued on the field than Harkes. Harkes is clearly better on the ball.
Could just as easily play a 4-2-3-1 with one outside back pushing forward while the other stays back to form a line of 3. Basically the setup Italy used in the 2021 Euros.
Maybe it will get better, but the formation was the cost of at least the first Chicago goal, as Polster wasn't able to get back and there was much too much space to play the cross in.
Also, not sure why it's necessary to play Jones on the right - is Polster left-footed? Seems like what we're losing is Jones' ability to get forward into the attack. We haven't seen that in a while - maybe they want to avoid Chancalay and Jones fighting for the same space?
Yeah, holding Jones in a deeper role seems odd. If he was allowed to get forward on the right it would allow Nacho more range of movement centrally. That would seemingly play to both their qualities.
And then have Polster or however at left back stay in a 3 with the centerbacks.
