Revolution Focused On "Becoming A Better Version" Of Themselves Amid Unbeaten Streak
“We have goals at the end of the year. To achieve those goals, we have to keep becoming a better version of ourselves individually and collectively."
The New England Revolution return to the field on Saturday when they host FC Cincinnati, one of three home games in June.
The Revs enter the weekend on a nine-game unbeaten run during which they collected 19 of 27 points. They’re currently two points below the playoff line, though they’ve played at least one game less than every team above them.
As such, the Revolution are focused on continually getting better.
“We have goals at the end of the year,” Porter said. “To achieve those goals, we have to keep becoming a better version of ourselves individually and collectively. We’re on a good run, but we’ve dropped some points as well.”
The Revs’ hot streak has seen them score 16 goals and allow seven. They’ve collected six clean sheets in their last nine games.
The Revolution’s top scorer is Carles Gil with six. He is trailed by Ilay Feingold (3) and Leo Campana (2). Matt Polster, Peyton Miller, Maxi Urruti, Ignatius Ganago, Alhassan Yusuf, and Tomas Chancalay each have a single tally.
Porter views having multiple scoring threats as a positive.
“For me, I’m not worried about who scores,” Porter said. “It’s about making sure that we find goals and we’ve done that during this stretch. Earlier in the year we weren’t doing that.
“It’s a great thing that we’re finding goals and it’s not having to come from our strikers. I do believe that we’ll get the strikers scoring. When we do, we’re going to be a team that’s hard to gameplan for because we have goals coming from different players in different ways.”
This weekend’s opponent is an interesting one, as FC Cincinnati is the only team to beat the Revs in their last 11 games.
The Revs know that Saturday’s outing will be a tough one, despite Cincinnati’s 0-2-2 run since May 14. Porter called them “a very good team,” while Carles Gil said they are “one of the best teams in the league.”
“Last time we played Cincinnati, we lost a tight game, 1-0, and we haven’t lost since,” Porter said. “This is, for me, a good opportunity to show where we’re at midseason and how much have we improved since the last time we played Cincinnati.”
The Revs have put themselves in a good position to rise in the standings, but they know they can’t get too far ahead of themselves. Every game, including the three in June, can bring them closer to their goal of making the playoffs.
“We understand that with our games in hand, if we win a couple games we’re up there pretty high on the table,” Porter said. “But it doesn’t do any good to talk about it. You have to take each game as it comes and take care of business.
“Our mindset is to prepare really well, which we have this week. We have one more day, and then we’ll throw ourselves into this game against Cincinnati.”
While I understand the phrase "unbeaten streak" it really, really makes me grit my teeth.
In the long run ties can put you out of the playoff picture. You are still dropping two points that can make it or break it for you in the end.
