I've watched three Crew games from 2022 so far, agree that wing play was a critical feature. Saw more of those direct attacks when they were sitting on a lead and putting almost everyone behind the ball.

They did defend really well in organized phases in their own half.

But the pressing definitely came and went and at times they looked tame in the attacking third.

I knew I wanted to do some sort of analysis of the 2022 Crew but wasn’t sure how to do it. I started watching full games but that task was too tall. I opted for watching all of the recaps, but totally recognize that this approach has flaws.

I agree about pressing. I didn’t see as much as I expected, though I only watched the highlights. They definitely did some pressing but I wouldn’t call them a pressing team based on what I saw.

There were definitely some aerial crosses but I noticed a lot of passes on the ground leading to goals. I saw a lot of cutbacks and low-driven balls. That’s something I’m keeping an eye on, especially after seeing how Polster scored during preseason.

I do think the Revs need to 2-3 players who are able to shoot from distance. Chancalay appears to be able to do that.

All the stats I looked at relating to pressing had the Crew pressing more and more effectively than the Revs that year but not at the level of the Red Bulls or Montreal with Nancy.

I'm most interested to see what their press is like this year.

And Chucho was a one man demolition machine against Montreal, Vrioni and Wood definitely can't match that. Chancalay and Borrero will be hugely important.

Cucho was really good. He has good movement and a knack for scoring. He definitely helped the team.

It was interesting to watch all of the Crew highlights because I was reminded of that year’s Revs team.

I’m definitely not making excuses for them, but the Crew had some bad luck. They hit the post a decent amount and conceded some weird goals. One of the goals they allowed was a long cross that Room mishandled.

Yeah, their 1-2 loss at home to Montreal, they should have been out of sight and up 3-0 after 60 minutes. And then lost in the last 15 minutes after a 90 minute weather delay.

They were a bit unlucky to not finish higher and make the playoffs.

But they did consistently throw points away late. Their 2-2 at Gillette, they got super passive in the 2nd half and only tied it up because 2022 Vintage Omar Gonzalez couldn't track a runner.
