Thanks Seth. The Vrioni saga is fascinating. With his limited minutes, analysis like this is really cool. Seems like he could be a quality player and I’d love to see him start 2-3 games in a row, but who knows.
Your focus on Vironi is well intentioned but I feel missed guided. The real Revs issue with offense producing goals is how to create chances without Gil. If others could pass and create chances, the Rev would begin resembling a professional soccer team. With Gil out on injury, etc. no one has been able to step up and orchestrate something of an attack. With Gil in, everyone waits for him to create the pass and that doesn't work. It gives the other team ONE person to focus on (Gil) and they clearly do. Case in point, how many times is Gil fouled or manhandled (without a foul being called) in every minute of every game.
A striker is a striker, and yes, some are better than others, and yes, chemistry helps. But I believe it is more important to have other folks creating chances. Other than the crosses from Emma, who has stepped up to consistently provide some offense? At one time, we could get a balance of crosses from Bye or Jones, but recently its Emma or nothing. That won't help us be competitive in this league.
You’re right to say that there are other issues besides Vrioni, but I decided to focus on him because he spilt time with Altidore. Who should be getting more minutes?
In terms of what you’re saying, so much of that has to do with injuries. This team would be better with the likes of Borrero, Nacho, McNamara, Bye, etc. The Revs have had to go pretty far into their depth. I’m not sure how many MLS teams can do that.
I’m interested in seeing what happens in the summer transfer window. I think they have to add a winger.
Even after the window, the striker position will likely still be a topic of debate, unless the club adds a prototypical No. 9 who is an aerial threat.
