Vermont Green FC Women Shut-Out Flower City 1872
The Green came out victorious in the first of two exhibition matches to be played this week.
Vermont Green FC hosted the first of two women’s exhibition matches on Wednesday night, welcoming Flower City 1872 to Virtue Field in Burlington, Vermont. Led by USWNT alum Sam Mewis, the Green only held three total training sessions before the mid-week match-up.
It only took the hosts 21 minutes to find the opening goal, after midfielder Olivia Borgen was able to play a ball into Sophie Reale down the touchline. Reale, taking the ball herself, was able to work her way into Flower City’s box and get her shot off, beating the keeper to the lower left-hand corner for the lead.
In the 55th minute, it was Borgen who would double the lead for the Green, finding herself on the end of a ball from Ava McNeil that she was able to slot past the keeper to the far post.
Vermont’s third goal came in spectacular fashion in the 63rd minute when Sophia Lowenberg, who earned Maple Woman of the Match honors for the exhibition, scored an absolute screamer from way outside of Flower City’s box.
The final nail in the coffin came in the 88th minute as defender Violet Rademacher was able to get her head on the end of a corner kick from Georgina Clarke, beating the keeper to the near post to put the game to bed for Vermont. Clarke also earned her second assist for the evening, following the goal from Lowenberg.
Vermont’s next match will take place on Saturday, June 14th, with the Green hosting AS Blainville in another sold-out exhibition at Virtue Field. Kick-off is set for 6 PM.
