USL League Two Northeast Division Roundup: Vermont Green Claim First
Will this be Vermont's year?
The Northeast division has a new leader as Vermont Green FC dominated Seacoast United 4-0.
The Green defeated the defending champions in an early Twin State Derby match. Historically, Seacoast has dominated the series but the club appears to be struggling with the departure of head coach Alex Ryan.
Vermont was up for the match from the jump with David Ajagbe scoring in the fifth minute. Arnaud Tattevin scored his second league goal in the 25th minute to give the Green a 2-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the second half as captain Zach Zengue scored in the 57th minute while midfielder Eskil Gjerde scored his first goal for the Green in the 74th minute.
“It was an incredible team performance,” said head coach Chris Taylor. “The commitment to the game plan and the off-the-ball work was so impressive. The players showed that they would put the team objectives above themselves and they fed off each others determination. In the end, the quality on display—paired with a tenacious desire to compete—took us to the 3 points.”
With the win, Vermont leads the Northeast division while the Phantoms sit in sixth place. Even with the likes of Taig Healey and Marcos Dos Santos, the defending champions have not been able to find sustained success so far this season.
Elsewhere around the division, the Boston Bolts picked up its first win of the season against AC Connecticut who now sits in third place. Boston City FC on the other hand, had a rough Saturday afternoon as they suffered a 4-1 loss to Albany Rush who now sits in fourth place. Finally, Blackrock FC defeated NEFC 1-0.
With Seacoast and the Western Mass Pioneers playing to a draw, Vermont has control of its own destiny. If the Green can defeat the Pioneers it could be on the precipice of a division championship.
