Teenagers Peyton Miller And Allan Oyirwoth Stand Out for Revolution
Porter says Miller was "excellent" and Oyirwoth "made it look easy."
New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter sees great potential in teenagers Peyton Miller and Allan Oyirworth.
Miller, operating as a left wingback, made his 25th appearance (24th start) in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Toronto FC.
His speed and strength were assets, as he was unabashed about getting forward while also putting in the work defensively. The 17-year-old has been a regular contributor in his second season with the first team.
“Peyton was excellent,” Porter said. “It's obvious our year has not been good, so it's probably lost in the shuffle the steps he's made forward.
“I remember when we first started playing him, he couldn't make it 90 minutes. We had to sub him out every single half, he was dead. He's playing 90s, he's playing 90s at a high level, and he's getting better defensively, he's getting better in the final third. He's had an excellent year. His mentality, he takes steps forward every single week.”
Oyirwoth, 18, also looked the part in his first MLS start, playing 86 minutes alongside Alhassan Yusuf at central midfield.
He used his frame to win possession and showcased an ability to pick out a penetrating pass.
“Allan, he made it look easy tonight,” Porter said. “For an 18-year-old kid to go out there and kind of breeze it like he did, I don't think he did much wrong tonight. And you never know with a kid when you put him in, what his mentality is going to be like.
“He was very calm and confident and did extremely well, technically, tactically, physically. I thought he had an excellent game.”
The MLS broadcast had a graphic in the 43rd minute highlighting the most active players. Oyirwoth was first, having covered 3.4 miles, while Miller was fifth (2.9 miles).
Oyirworth was all smiles after the game, noting that he had received many positive messages from friends, family, and teammates.
He hopes to continue to contribute to the first team.
“I feel very confident because I was motivated by most of the players and coaches,” Oyirwoth said. “They motivated me a lot. I felt everything was fine. I think the team played really well, and I’m proud of everyone.
“The confidence they gave me, the motivation, I’m very happy, and I hope for the rest of the season, we continue to work together to make sure that we get wins for the club. And the fans also, make sure we make them very happy.”
Porter believes that Miller and Oyirwoth are two promising pieces for the Revolution, who have developed young players in the past.
While it might be too early to say that they’re destined to be transferred overseas like Esmir Bajraktarevic, both players have garnered interest.
“It bodes well for the future, for sure,” Porter said. “What does that mean for their future? Who knows? We don't know that yet, but it’s exciting, those two guys, what they can do in the future.”
When will Porter learn to SUB, or is his bench so weak he doesn't care to?
