Sources indicate that the New England Revolution will waive goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic, a transaction done to free up an international slot, which will allow Allan Oyirwoth to start this weekend.
Ivacic, 31, will soon obtain a U.S. Green Card, which means he will not count as an international in the future.
The Slovenian has eight shutouts this year, two short of the club’s single-season record by an individual goalkeeper. He had a 409-minute shutout streak between April 5 and May 10, the second-longest streak in Revolution history.
His performances against Atlanta United and Charlotte FC–four saves in each–helped secure critical road points during a four-game winning streak.
Matt Turner, who returned to the Revs on loan from Lyon, has started in net for the last five games.
Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo and goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock recently praised Ivacic’s professionalism during this time.
“Aljaz has started the season extremely strong for us,” Onalfo said on August 4. “He’s a class act.”
On August 30, Hitchcock said, “He’s been the model professional. He’s worked hard. He’s worked even harder in training. He’s training fantastic.
“He looks really good, and it’s one of those things that happened. The club made a decision to get Matt, and they’re going to put him in. But Ally, a credit to his professionalism. I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”
Ivacic, whose contract was up at the end of the year, will soon be available to join teams inside or outside of MLS.
After all that went down, this seemed inevitable--and it still leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. And Matt Turner, so far, has not shown himself to be an upgrade. I wish Ali the very best in the future--he is a proven, more than capable starter in this league and I hope he lands on his feet.
Didn't he get his green card recently to free up and international spot?
