Rumor: Mauricio Pochettino In Mix For USMNT Coaching Position
Could the experienced club coach make his way to the United States?
According to Argentine outlet Diario Olé, Mauricio Pochettino’s name is in the mix to fill the currently vacant USMNT head coaching position.
Following a playing career spanning Argentina, France, and Spain, Poch began coaching with Spanish side Espanyol before spending time with French side Paris Saint-Germain, and English sides Southampton, Tottenham, and Chelsea.
After departing Chelsea after one season, Olé reports Pochettino’s name was on Manchester United’s list if the club and Erik Ten Hag parted ways, yet Manchester United decided to stick with the Dutch gaffer.
Pochettino’s consideration for the open position comes days after Gregg Berhalter’s tenure ended following a disappointing performance during the recent Copa America competition that saw the U.S. fail to escape the group stage.
Pochettino is not the first big name the USSF has considered since Berhalter’s departure. The organization reportedly reached out to former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp. It appears that Klopp is keen on taking a break from football as he reportedly declined the position.
Whether it’s Poch or another name, the United States Soccer Federation is aiming to appoint a new coach for the Men’s National Team by September according to Fox Soccer.
