Romney Wins Revolution Defender of the Year, Team Option Exercised; Others Reportedly Have Options Declined
A number of players reportedly will leave the Revolution. Dave Romney won't be one of them.
Shortly after being named the 2024 Revolution Defender of the Year, Dave Romney confirmed he will return next season to defend his title.
“I had my exit meeting yesterday. My option was picked up, it triggered in the middle of the year,” stated Romney. “I’m just excited. It will be nice to have a little break, but I’m already, with how the season ended, I’m so excited to start a new season and kind of forget about this season.”
Romney won his second Revolution Defender of the Year award, as voted on by the media, for the second year in a row. He joins Francis Okaroh, Michael Parkhurst, and Andrew Farrell as players who have won the award in back-to-back years. After a brief stint on the bench and on the trading block earlier in the year, Romney will attempt to be the first player to win the award three years in a row.
While the team hasn’t announced end-of-year roster decisions, a number of other players have reportedly had their options declined. Caleb Pongratz of Prost Soccer reported Earl Edwards Jr. Jonathan Mensah, Ema Boateng, and Tommy McNamara had their options declined. Tom Quinlan of WPRO added Nacho Gil also had his option declined.
Quinlan also stated Boateng will return to the Revolution. While that appears to contradict Pongratz’s reporting, it is possible Boateng will re-sign with the club after having his team option declined, like he has done the previous two seasons.
In Revolution II news, Gustavo Lopes of Nossa Radio USA stated Lucas Maciel, who is out of contract, will not return to the Revolution organization. Additionally, Marcos Dias, who is also out of contract, has had preliminary talks with the team about a return, but Lopes states he has “little to no interest” in playing for Revolution II.
In addition to the players listed above, first-term players with team options are Xavier Arreaga, Joshua Bolma, Dylan Borrero, Brandon Bye, Andrew Farrell, Ian Harkes, Matt Polster, and Will Sands.
Five players are currently out of contract: Tim Parker, Nick Lima, Bobby Wood, Damien Rivera, and Ryan Spaulding.
Teams are not required to submit end-of-year roster decisions until November 27th, but can announce the decisions at any point in the offseason.
Remember when Onalfo wanted to trade him for next to no GAM and Porter snapped at a reporter saying he thought Dave Romney sucks
Not bad for a player sucked and who Porter wanted to trade earlier this season. Romney has made Porter eat his words. Give Porter a big Romney smile when he hands you the award.
