Rhode Island FC 2025 Woes Continue in Louisville
You know, losing to Louisville City is a totally normal thing to do, even if it took RIFC four tries.
Rhode Island FC fans have come into this season with a lot to hope for. Key new signings, like midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, an offense that had finally found its stride in addition to their brand-new stadium, posed them for dominance in the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference.
In contrast to their mascot, a Harbor Seal, Rhode Island FC have played their first twelve matches like limp fish, flipping and flopping ineffectually in its dwindling pond. They are now 3-3-6, with as many points as they have matches.
Rhode Island FC started off from a difficult position. The club has suffered a number of injuries lately, and with the mid-week match it chose to rotate a number of positions. RIFC opened the match from a position of defense from the very start. In the 20th minute, Louisville defender Aiden McFadden caught onto a difficult cross from midfielder Aiden Perez, and McFadden calmly nodded the header past RIFC goalkeeper Jackson Lee.
A sudden cross by Rhode Island FC’s midfielder Joe Brito sent just sneaking across the mouth of goal was redirected in by Louisville FC defender Kyle Marsh in the 27th minute, but that hope was not to last. Rhode Island went into the half having a difficult time, and it came back out having a difficult time.
It was the 60th minute before Rhode Island FC got any kind of solid attack off in the second half, a header that was easily saved. Midfielder Zachary Herivaux got a good shot off just a few moments later, but it too was easily saved, and the resulting counterattack proved Rhode Island’s doom. Louisville midfielder Ray Serrano was played wide open on goal by midfielder Jansen Wilson, and Serrano fired the resulting shot past a diving Lee.
The rest of the game was being seen out without Rhode Island FC seeing much of the ball, which evidently bothered Rhode Island FC’s players to receive yet another in what has become an epidemic this season. Midfielder Jojea Kwizera was sent off for blatantly tripping a Louisville player four minutes into what was to be five minutes of stoppage time in a 2-1 loss to Louisville City FC. As such, the loss quickly became two for the price of one.
Rhode Island FC will be back in action at home, at Centreville Stadium in Pawtucket, RI on Saturday, June 14th, at 7 PM ET.
