Rhode Island Acquires Matthew Corcoran on Loan
The Nashville SC midfielder will look to bring experience to RIFC's struggling attack.
Rhode Island FC have acquired midfielder Matthew Corcoran on loan from MLS side Nashville SC. The 19-year-old Dallas native has previously worked with RIFC head coach Khano Smith at Birmingham Legion FC back in 2022-23.
At the beginning of Corcoran’s career he joined the youth academy at FC Dallas, being called up to join the team’s reserve side, North Texas SC in 2020. The following year, the midfielder made his senior debut for the club in their USL League One match against Fort Lauderdale CF as a substitute.
Signing with Birmingham Legion in January 2022, Corcoran made 54 appearances across the span of three seasons with the club. He bagged his first senior-level goal in Birmingham’s 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on May 14, 2023. Birmingham transferred Corcoran to Nashville SC in January for an undisclosed fee.
The teenager has logged 243 minutes across seven appearances for Nashville this season, including three starts for the club. On May 31 he got his first two professional assists in Nashville’s 2-2 tie against New York CIty FC. He most recently added another goal to his resume, scoring against English Premier League competitors Aston Villa as Nashville fought back to earn a tie.
Corcoran also has international experience, having been called up at the U-17, U-19, and U-20 levels for the United States. He was a member of the squad that represented the U.S. at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia back in 2023, earning starts in three out of four matches including their Round of 16 loss to eventual champions Germany.
