Revolution Players Happy Matt Polster Signed Contract Extension
"He’s a legend for this club already."
New England Revolution players are happy that Matt Polster is sticking around.
Polster, 31, signed a multi-year contract extension to keep him in New England through 2027. The midfielder, who arrived midway through the 2020 season, was in the final year of his contract.
“Very happy for him, for his family,” Carles Gil said. “He deserved that. He’s been a very good player for us.”
Polster has collected 144 regular-season appearances with the Revolution, including 130 starts. Recently, he’s paired with Alhassan Yusuf in the middle of the park.
“It’s always good to play alongside [Polster],” Yusuf said. “I think the contract, he deserved it. He’s a legend for this club already, so I think he deserved it.”
Head coach Caleb Porter noted that he’s always been aware of Polster’s quality, dating back to his time with the Chicago Fire. Now that they’re working together closely, Porter sees his value as a person and leader.
“He’s an excellent leader,” Porter said. “He’s a great pro. He’s a great guy. He’s a winner. We’re really happy to have him.”
Aljaz Ivacic said that Polster, who has donned the captain’s armband, is a “leader on and off the field, and a great example in the locker room.”
The Revs are a relatively young team, so having some experienced players to serve as guides is helpful.
“We are trying to help the team as much as we can,” Ivacic said. “We need to help the younger guys. First to be an example in training and games then to talk to them if they have anything going on off the field. We just need to make sure that the energy in the locker room is good.”
