Revolution II vs New York City FC II: Three Thoughts
Three thoughts following Revolution II's first road win since August of 2023!
Saturday saw New England Revolution II hit the road for a fourth-consecutive match as they traveled to Belson Stadium in Queens to take on New York City FC II.
Both sides put up a tremendous effort that kept the game deadlocked at zero for the majority of the match. That was until Homegrown Malcolm Fry slipped one past Alex Rando and in to propel Revolution II to their first road victory of 2025 and their first since August of 2023.
1 - 20th Time’s The Charm
Revolution II came into Saturday’s match amidst an extensive 19-game winless streak on the road. Since their last road win on August 27, 2023, the club had gone an abysmal 0-17-2 on the road with two shootout victories.
It looked as if that streak was going to reach the 20-game milestone but didn’t, thanks to Homegrown Malcolm Fry’s 89th-minute strike.
To be a contender in any sport, you have to win away from home, something Revs II evidently couldn’t do in the lead-up Saturday.
Seeing Revolution II pick up all three points on the road was a tremendous sight to see, but the question lingers if they can continue finding points on the road, or was Saturday’s win a stroke of good fortune? We’ll find the answer to that during the remaining nine away matches in 2025.
2 - Fry’s Fantastic Return
2025 has been rough for Fry. An undisclosed leg injury had kept him out of action since the start of the 2025 season, with him returning to training within the last few weeks.
Saturday marked the Groton, Massachusetts native’s season debut, and it ended in glory when he found the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to propel Revolution II to a 1-0 win.
It will take the Revolution Homegrown some more time to get fit, but Saturday was a great way for the 20-year-old to start his 2025 campaign.
3 - Max’s Maximum Effort
Saturday marked the 2025 debut of goalkeeper Max Weinstein, whose last appearance for the club came on September 15, 2024.
Considering it was Weinstein’s first appearance in eight months, he did a solid job in net and was a big factor in Revolution II’s win.
The former Academy prospect ended the match with four saves, several from close range, which guided Revs II to their fourth clean sheet of 2025 and Weinstein’s fifth career clean sheet.
It’s a shock that it took 10 games for Weinstein to make his 2025 debut, but we finally got to see the Vermont native appear. Hopefully, there will be more appearances to come for Weinstein.
It was good to Max get the start. For unknown reasons he has been put on the back burner?
