Revolution II Suffer Loss In Gillette Stadium Return
Things didn't go well for Revs II in their return home following the five-game road trip.
After 50 long days, Richie Williams and New England Revolution II took the field at Gillette Stadium as they hosted Eastern Conference bottom dwellers FC Cincinnati 2.
Sunday’s home match comes on the heels of a five-game road trip that saw Revolution II secure seven points following a 1-2-2 record with two shootout victories.
Williams made three changes from the lineup that secured two points against Chicago Fire II. Max Weinstein made his third-consecutive start in goal behind the backline of Hesron Barry, Victor Souza, Gabe Dahlin, and first-team defender Damario McIntosh. First-team midfielder Eric Klein joined Javaun Mussenden and Marcos Dias in the midfield behind the attacking trio of Gevork Diarbian, Liam Butts, and Cristiano Oliveira.
Revs II nearly found themselves on the board in the 20th minute when Damario McIntosh got on the end of a long ball forward and found himself one-on-one with Paul Walters. Unfortunately for Revs II, Cincinnati’s defense recovered and put pressure on McIntosh, which forced him to direct a shot right at the keeper.
Barry was lucky to find himself still on the field in the 38th minute when he appeared to kick out at Carson Locker. Luckily for Barry and Revs II, the referee surprisingly only issued a yellow card.
Cincinnati broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. It started with Peter Mangione’s free kick finding Brian Schafer. After getting a touch on the ball and turning, Schafer volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give FCC 2 the 1-0 lead.
Revs II nearly found the equalizer in the 53rd minute when Liam Butts got on the end of a curling ball from Marcos Dias and volleyed it on target. Walters stretched wide to make the save and maintained Cincinnati’s lead.
Williams made his first change in the 64th minute when Michael Tsicoulias replaced Butts. Another change came in the 72nd minute when Judah Siqueira replaced Oliveira.
Revs II squandered a golden opportunity in the 82nd minute. After getting the ball inside the box, Diarbian maneuvered away from pressure and lobbed a ball far post. Walters stretched wide to deflect the ball but rebounded it into the path of Victor Souza yards away from goal. Souza looked poised to level the match but came up short, sending the ball over the net.
Despite the numerous opportunities at their disposal, Revolution II failed to pick up any points in their Gillette Stadium as FC Cincinnati 2 secured the 1-0 victory.
Revs II will look to bounce back from Sunday’s loss when they travel to Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, to take on Philadelphia Union II on June 26.
It was a tough loss. They had their chances to find the back of the net but it wasn't meant to be for them today.
