Recap: Revolution II's Hot Streak Ends in Carolina
Revs II come up short on the road and see their undefeated and winning streaks come extinguish.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II returned to action on Saturday as they took the field at Truist Point in High Point, North Carolina.
There were no changes from the lineups that secured back-to-back 3-0 victories over Orlando City B and Atlanta United 2. Donovan Parisian returned in net behind the backline of Hesron Barry, Victor Souza, Gabe Dahlin, and Damario McIntosh. Eric Klein, Allan Oyirwoth, and Marcos Dias formed the midfield behind the attacking trio of Gevork Diarbian, Liam Butts, and Malcolm Fry.
A great counterattack opportunity nearly led Revolution II to the first goal in the 19th minute. After getting the ball at midfield, Diarbian sprang up the left flank with Butts and Fry advancing into the box. Diarbian laid it beautifully for Fry, who attempted to rocket the ball to the upper right corner, but put it just wide of the target.
Oyirwoth then came close to finding the back of the net in the 33rd minute as he received a backpass from Klein. Carolina’s defense didn’t step up to him, which led Oyirwoth to advance upfield before attempting to send a shot to the upper half of the net. Unfortunately for Oyirwoth, he put too much on the shot as it steadily rose over the crossbar and flew out of play.
Revolution II’s first changes came in the 63rd minute as Sharod George and Damorney Hutchinson replaced Butts and Diarbian.
After several great chances from both sides, Carolina broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. A free kick opportunity led the ball to Zion Scarlett, who took a touch and slotted it home to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.
Two more changes came in the 78th minute as Joe Buck and Javaun Mussenden replaced Malcolm Fry and Damario McIntosh.
Despite valiant efforts, Revolution II were unable to claw their way back into the game, as their five-game unbeaten and four-game win streak ended following a 1-0 loss.
Revs II will look to get back on track on August 10 when they return home to face Columbus Crew 2.
