Olger Escobar Describes Emotional Two Weeks
Hear what Escobar had to say after tallying his first goals at the club and international level.
The past two weeks will be ones 18-year-old Olger Escobar will remember for the rest of his life.
It all started when he received another call-up to the Guatemalan National Team as the nation looked to qualify for this summer’s Gold Cup competition when they faced Guyana in a two-game series. Before they met Guyana, Guatemala got one last tune-up as they faced Honduras in a friendly match on March 16th.
Despite starting the game on the bench, Escobar got the opportunity to come on before the second half. Just as it looked like the game would end in a 1-1 draw, a poor turnover from Honduras led to Escobar capitalizing in the 86th minute. He ran onto an open ball and proceeded to strike the rolling ball goalward and his shot miraculously curled to the top-right corner and in to propel Guatemala to a 2-1 victory.
After notching his first career international goal, Escobar came into the Gold Cup Preliminary series.
With a successful stint with the Guatemalan National Team under his belt, Escobar returned to Revolution II as the club hosted Toronto FC II. Escobar started Friday’s match on the bench before making his way onto the pitch in the 65th minute as Revs II held the 1-0 lead.
The forward had an immediate impact on the game as he played the ball to Gevork Diarbian before Diarbian’s deflected shot led to Liam Butts doubling the lead less than a minute after Escobar entered the match. That wouldn’t be Escobar’s only impact on the game.
After driving the ball forward, Marcos Dias cut the ball to Escobar on the right in the 75th minute. Escobar cut the ball to his left before sending a shot on target that evaded Adisa De Rosario and crashed into the net to score his first goal with Revolution II and extend the lead to three.
Following the match, The Blazing Musket talked to Olger about the exciting few weeks that have seen him tally his first goals at the club and international level.
“I feel very special right now for getting my first goal with Guatemala and obviously for Revs II,” he said. “It’s been a huge emotional week for me.”
Richie Williams also praised the young attacker following the match.
“Olger is a very talented player,” Williams said. “He has such good technical ability and ability to get forward It was good to see for him individually and for the team.”
Hopefully, these two achievements will boost Escobar’s confidence and lead to continued production throughout 2025.
