Matt Polster Opens Up About Contract Situation
Polster: “I would love to be here. I’ve expressed my feelings about being here, so we haven’t had any further conversations, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
Matt Polster, who is in the last year of his contract with the New England Revolution, is looking to enjoy every moment.
The 31-year-old, who played for the Chicago Fire and Revolution of Major League Soccer, as well as Rangers FC of the Scottish Premier League, has experienced a lot.
In his first game at Gillette Stadium in 2025, he created a priceless memory when he walked out with his son and daughter.
“You don’t know how many opportunities you’ll get to do that,” Polster told The Blazing Musket after Saturday’s 2-0 win over New York City FC. “I wanted to do it here. Who knows how much longer that is?
“It’s a special moment for me and my wife. We’ve been here for six years now. This is my sixth season, so we’ll see what happens. For me, it’s just to enjoy that moment.”
Polster has been with the Revolution since mid-2020. In August 2022, he signed a contract extension that included two guaranteed years and one option year. His current deal is set to expire after this season.
Sources tell The Blazing Musket that contract discussions that occurred during the off-season have stalled after multiple rounds of negotiations. If a new deal isn’t agreed upon, Polster would become a free agent ahead of 2026.
Polster is currently the fourth-longest tenured player on the Revolution behind Andrew Farrell (2013), Brandon Bye (2018), and Carles Gil (2019). He has made 140 appearances for New England, including five straight starts this year.
“I would love to be here,” Polster said. “I’ve expressed my feelings about being here, so we haven’t had any further conversations, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
Polster has recently received praise from those within the team.
Head coach Caleb Porter called Polster a “leader” who is “very experienced,” and noted that he’s paired well with Alhassan Yusuf.
Captain Carles Gil said, “When we can have the best Matt, it's easier for everyone because he's a player that can do many things."
While contract talks are currently quiet, Polster remains committed to being the best version of himself.
“I just have to continually play well, and just focus on what I can control,” Polster said. “We’ll see what happens at the end of the year.”
Much like Carles Gil, we don’t have a replacement for Polster.
If Porter is still around (hope not) Matt will have not problem with staying with the Revs as he is one of his favorites.
