Liam Butts Feeling Good After Standout Performance
Hear what Butts had to say about his comeback, his time with the Guyana National Team, and his incredible performance off the bench against Toronto FC II.
After injuries caused havoc in his debut season, 2025 has gotten off to a good start for forward Liam Butts.
Butts is feeling good after his first stint with the Guyana National Team and a strong outing off the bench against TFC II. The forward featured on Guyana’s roster as the nation faced fellow teammate Olger Escobar and Guatemala as both nations battled to secure their spot in the 2025 Gold Cup.
Unfortunately, a slight knock prevented him from making his international debut as he was an unused sub in both matches as Guatemala advanced following a 4-3 series win.
Despite not playing, Butts expressed his gratitude and excitement to get a chance to be called up by Guyana.
“Being there was nice,” he said. “It’s always good to train with people you usually never do. Got to experience a different level, which I think was great.”
Friday saw Butts start on the bench after his international excursion. Despite entering in the 65th minute, Butts had a tremendous impact on Revolution II’s 4-0 win.
Less than a minute after coming onto the pitch, Butts found his first goal of the 2025 campaign. The forward came up big again in the 88th minute.
Eric Klein turned on the jets and dispossessed Michael Sullivan before booting the ball forward, looking for the empty-net goal. Unfortunately for Klein, Toronto’s defense recovered just in time to clear the ball off the line but hankfully for Revs II, the clearance fell right to Marcos Dias. After getting an awkward touch on the ball, Dias slotted the ball centrally to Butts, who bagged his second goal of the day.
While injuries took a toll on Butts, the forward expressed his gratitude to the medical staff following Friday’s win for getting him back into the physical and mental shape he’s in today.
“Obviously, last year was tough with injuries,” Butts said. “Credit to the medical staff for helping me build my body back up and getting my confidence back.”
When asked about getting on the score sheet, Butts emphasized how it’s a “good feeling” but also highlighted how having the entire Revs II offense producing is just as crucial.
“Whether I’m scoring or others are scoring, I think it’s just good to be involved,” he said. “Having players that can make an impact everywhere makes it easier for all of us because the defense can’t just focus on one of us. They have to be aware. It makes my job easier, and in turn, helps the team overall.”
While 2025 has gotten off to an incredible start, Butts emphasized how the success isn’t getting into the team’s head.
“We’re keeping our heads down, staying focused,” he said. “Obviously, done well so far, but it's early in the season. I think we just want to keep our momentum and find ways we can improve. Glad we started well, but we also have stuff to improve on and we’re just looking to get a little better each game.”
Butts and Revolution II will look to continue their success when they hit the road on April 9 to face Orlando City B at 7 PM ET.
