Carles Gil's All-Star Caliber Performance Catalyzes Revs Draw
“Carles carried the team once again. He was just a guy unwilling to lose today. He brought us back from the dead pretty much, and we thank him."
Carles Gil had an all-star caliber performance in Saturday’s 3-3 draw between the New England Revolution and Colorado Rapids, just days after he was omitted from the summer showcase.
The Revs erased a three-goal deficit to earn a point, with Gil catalyzing the comeback.
Gil forced an own goal in the 58th minute when he offered a cross that Sam Vines put into his own net. The midfielder scored in the 86th minute via a penalty he earned. He collected a secondary assist in stoppage time as his diagonal ball found Tanner Beason, who played a cross that Maxi Urruti nodded home.
It was the first time in club history that the Revs earned a point after going down three or more goals.
“Carles carried the team once again,” Matt Polster said. “He was just a guy unwilling to lose today. He brought us back from the dead pretty much, and we thank him.
“But I thought it was a team effort in general. You still need other guys to step up and help win the games. Obviously, Maxi scored a goal, and other guys contributed today.”
Gil currently leads the Revs in goals (7) and assists (6). On Saturday, he had four shots and six key passes.
Gil, a three-time MLS All-Star, was not named to the 2025 roster, which was announced on Wednesday.
“I’m shocked that Carles is not an all-star,” head coach Caleb Porter said. “I think it’s a travesty. Honestly, how he doesn’t get picked is strange.
“Maybe [MLS All-Star and Austin FC head coach] Nico [Estévez] – you know, I was in that role, so I don’t want to judge him, but he’s in the other conference, so he’s not seeing probably as many of the games that we’re playing and that Carles is playing. But I did have a chat with him, and he said he liked him before he made his decision.”
Polster agrees with Porter, saying, “Every year he should be an all-star.”
Gil understands the decision, noting that it’s not just the best players, but also big names and rising stars. The Revolution captain is now more focused on helping his team with the busy slate ahead.
“It’s the week that we play on Friday, so I prefer to be here with my team to prepare for the game against Montreal,” Gil said.
Gil has been excellent all year, but sometimes snubs can provide extra motivation, which Porter hopes is the case.
“For sure, there will be an edge with Carles the rest of the year to show everybody, and we do play Austin in a couple of weeks,” Porter said with a laugh.
He should have been picked. But he can put all his energy into the team to help them win.
